After several searches both in here and elsewhere on the internet I've yet to see a problem/question like what I have so here goes.

First what I have. 92 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2WD, 2.4L automatic. From what I've ascertained in this and other forums is that I have a 4G64 wideblock. After taking it apart I also know it's a 6 Bolt crank.

Second a brief on what happened. Bought the truck from a coworker. He told me he thought the balance shaft belt was broken because he heard an intermittent noise from the engine. Having owned a Max previously that I put over 400K on I thought no problem I can handle that. Front was apart so he could replace the belt but got in motorcycle wreck and left it alone, so it wasn't running. Got it to the house, replaced the belt and found out the pin sheared toasting both gears attached letting them wobble. Thought that could explain the noise he heard fixed that problem with new gears and pin, put it together and discovered rod knock. Tore the motor down and started accruing parts. Ended up needing to get a crank, pistons, rings gaskets etc. Rods were fine.

Now my problem. The pistons (stock non forged type)I ordered I guess were to a 7 bolt because when I went to get them installed I was told the wrist pin was too big, (up to 92 is a 21mm and 92 up is 22mm correct?).

Goal. To get this truck running as a daily driver. Not looking for anything to boost, spray, destroke, etc. It will see 100 miles a day hopefully for a long time to come with a fresh trans and motor. Later on down the line I "might" do the DOHC head swap, but only when I get my other irons in the fire out. Right now I need it running without spending a boatload more.

Questions. Is there a way to make these pistons work since I can't return them (ebay). Are there any rod swap options to make these work on my engine? If not is it safe to have the rods opened up to accept the bigger pin? Is there an aftermarket rod to mate these pistons to my crank? Had I known this issue before buying parts I would have looked into it more but now I already bought the crank and pistons so if possible I'd rather use them and get a new set of rods since they are the only part I haven't replaced yet.

Short answer, no.

If not is it safe to have the rods opened up to accept the bigger pin?
I doubt they'll fail, it's been done many times before, but if this is going to see moderate boost ever, I'd probably do something else. This is your only option if you insist on using the pistons you have.

Is there an aftermarket rod to mate these pistons to my crank?
No. The way I see it, you should just sell the pistons and get the right ones.

edit:

Yes. The rods can be machined for the 22mm pin. Its actually a pretty common practice. Search around for "2g pistons on 1g rods." Try vfaq.com as well.

Right on.
Just remember that if you buy a set of used rods that have been opened up, the 1G 7 bolts do this "upgrade" often as well. The 7 bolt rods aren't compatible with your 6 bolt crank.

Alright thanks for the info! Didn't know the right nomenclature I guess (1g 2g thing) which is why I couldn't find it. Sorry for the newb question just needed to know the right words. This engine will not see boost at all so I'll go ahead and go that route.
