I know I'm not the only person looking for this. I know the differences in the engines (compression, oil squirters, etc.) but I'm just wondering if theres a journal or something of somebody actually turbo-ing a standard 4g63. Help?

First off, thanks for the quick response. That was exactly what I was looking for :D

Question for ya tho. Am I better off saving up and finding/buying a 4g63t engine with all the accessories I can get (which I can imagine is going to be kind of hard to find) OR turbo-ing my stock N/A (which means I'd have to get all the bolt-on's and swap the pistons, etc).

They way I figure, if I turbo the N/A one, I can buy the parts as I can afford them, which is easier on my budget. If I was to try and buy an actual 4g63t, I would need a nice chunk of money at once, which may be hard for me (I hate college :ohdamn: ).

Idk, just looking for some advice. Finally got a DSM, after wanting once forever, and I wanted it turbo-ed LOL.

Plenty of people have done it, like mentioned. I've personally done it a couple times. If you have a any questions, after reading the link above, feel free to PM me.

Same questions for you too :D

You can only do what your budget allows. Don't listen to anyone that says "sell your car and buy a turbo one". It's like saying 6 of one thing and half a dozen of the other. It's the EXACT same thing. Converting your car to a "TSi fwd spec" car and buying a TSi fwd is the same. No need to sell your car, just rebuy it again.

Honestly your best bet is to buy a 6 bolt turbo motor, and rebuild it. Whether that means buying it piece by piece (as money allows) or dropping $3K at once. Hands down, starting with a good (rebuilt) 6 bolt turbo motor is going to make things 10 times easier on you. Also, buying a turbo ECU/wiring harness is the only way (I feel) that is worth doing the swap. Adding wires is just asking for trouble. Is it do-able? Sure. But "IF" you mess something up, your trying to track down problems. The reason I say rebuild one, is because, let's face it, no one with a 1g turbo car "babies" the motor. NO ONE. The motors are 20 years old, there are no more "good ones" out there. If you start with a used motor, expect problems, simple as that.

Your best bang for the buck (right now) is 2 options. Buy the stock turbo parts, bolt them on your N/A motor, and run 7 - 8 psi. ~OR~ keep your car N/A till your ready to do the complete turbo swap with a good turbo motor. I recommend the 1st one.

Lastly remember, opinions are like a$$holes, everyone's got one. You just need to figure out what you can spend, and build accordingly. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy cheap, crap eBay engine parts (IE turbo, manifold, cams, pistons, etc). Strut tower braces and mufflers might be ok from eBay, but do you want to risk a $3K motor on a part that saves you $50? he!! NO!

Haha yeah, well hopefully I can do a complete engine swap... it seems like less of a hassle then hunting down all the parts, and bolting them on, wondering if it will work. I guess I'll have to start saving LOL Hopefully I get the job I just applied for, because if I do, the 4g63t swap will be much easier.

Sounds good if you need help i may have some small parts, the hardest part was the wiring, I got a free long block and the rest was slapping parts on.

Also you may want to call jasper motors they had some 4g63t motors left over when I got mine they had about 8 left and they weren't making anymore I picked mine up for about 2,500

You can buy a whole running turbo car for 2500. Paying that for a stock remanned turbo engine is outrageous.

Jasper gives u a warrenty, the only turbo car I ever see for sale are beat on, heavily modded by god know who and they generally ask 3500 to 5500. Ibeen looking for one in the 2500 price range now for some time thus me owning a n/a... Very seldom do I see a decent turbo car for 2500 and if u dont pounce on it first it's gone with the wind. I'd rock a Jasper rebuild but that's just my 2 cents...

Well you buy just a long block then you need a turbo, manifold, o2 housing, lines, water pipe, intake manifold, throttle body, wiring harness, ecu, knock sensor, maf sensor, intercooler and much more. You will be in it 3500 before you know it. You can take the non turbo engine and throw a set of 100 dollar turbo pistons in it and have the same engine.

Minus the oil squirters, and correct intake cam. Then you have a non turbo engine with cheap pistons that will end up cracking a ring land just like the non turbo pistons that are in the motor now. Like I said, buy a turbo motor and rebuilt it CORRECTLY.

Have any of you guys ever seen the half a$$'d BSE that Jasper does? Obviously not, or you'd recommend against using there engine. (just one example of poor quality).

Minus the oil squirters, and correct intake cam. Then there are the "accessory's" that are different. Oil pan, intake manifold, throttle body, exhaust manifold, knock sensor, etc.

The accessories ARE NOT different. They are exactly the same between the 2 engines. How many of these so called cheap pistons have to used? I've installed quite a few and have never cracked one single ring land. Npr are very high quality.

Even though i got a free block, the other parts including ecu, and turbo parts ran my less than 600 bucks on ebay. Local salvage yard too it was pieced together over some time. Cost depends on a lot of things where you get them from i see as the only downside, and knowing what parts go for. If i bought a block here in town still could have spend less than 500, again depends on variables. Plus it was fun when i learned about the various parts and what they did.

If im lost are we discussing non turbo and turbo , engine, oil pans, and throttle bodies, my non turbo ones didnt work with the turbo car oil pan, and throttle body. Accessories?

I've ruined more sets of "eBay" quality pistons then you've owned. Trust me. Just because I don't post my results, doesn't mean I don't try stuff. You get what you pay for. I'm trying to save the OP some hassle and money.

Bullshit. I've used them in 20+ different engines.

Check local craiglist ads for good cheap parts. Depending on what you need engine/drivetrain wise it can be easier to find a part out or someone selling a wrecked car. If the motor is good, good score. Otherwise doing a good budget rebuild on a 4g63t isnt too bad

How many of them are still running? How much power have you made?

Every one is still running to my knowledge. There were mostly used in customer cars or cars that i was selling. I have personally ran 25+ psi from a to4b v trim with no problem. I wouldn't use them in customers engines if they were junk.

Well then I stand corrected. Buy some NPR pistons and bolt the turbo parts.
