I have the lowest of the low grade of dsm the 1.8 SOHC 5 speed with no power windows or power locks (doesnt matter i picked it up for 500 dollars) and after driving this little engine that could for about 6 or 7 months i have really fallen in love with this car. and after tossing around the idea of doing the 6 bolt turbo swap i figured i would be like every other person out there with a dsm so i have decided to rebuild the 4g37 and see wut i can do with it and if anyone can help me out with finding parts or give advise on this it would be greatly appreciated

Did your engine die on you or are you just rebuilding it? Are you trying to get power from the 4g37? Btw, if you need an engine I have a running 4g37 I am never gonna use, I got it with a 94 that had a screwed up auto tranny. I bought the car for the body parts and interior. PM if you are interested.

Their have been 4G37's that have been modded and turboed that has came out pretty well, but don't expect the resulting power out of them like a 4G63 Turbo.

It's more for challenge more than anything why some will turbo a 4G37, but the results have been pretty impressive.

I've had two 4G37's (daughter has one of them with close to 200k miles on it - an auto) and loved them also before I graduated up to the 4G63 turbo. Nice little DD motors with good gas mileage.

Good luck - DSM

no the motor hasent died (yet) she has 197,600 miles on her im hoping to see if i can get atleast 220k outta it and see how it is then after that i may buy a block and go from there or if mine is still in good condition im going to have it machined all new internals mayb bored and possibly stroked (if there is a stroker kit for it please PM me with details) i kno its not going to make the HP of a 4g63 but i enjoy a good challenge

btw this car is staying non turbo i like N/A cars there more reliable

There's a good writeup of a 1.8L build on DSMtalk that is a N/A build.

iirc the person expected around 170-190whp from the build which for N/A is pretty good.

I have a 92 1.8L laser that's my DD and it has been said that the 1.8L's are absolute tanks and will last forever. You can practically weld your hood shut. My 1.8 has never had an issue, although everything else on the car makes itself obviously known that it's a DSM :p

ROFL the 1.8 is a tank i have been beating on it for 11,000 miles never ment to intentionally beat on it but i find myself constantly beating on it and aside from the dreaded lifter tick i havent had a problem with it yet (so far) the CEL isnt even on

I hear you on the lifter tick.. mine is terrible about it.

I'm probably going to sell mine just because I can tell the tranny is starting to go out - and I'm simply tired of dealing with it. It had two owners before my mom that beat the hell out of it and ghetto'rigged multiple things. My mom didn't help it any xD

I got it for $300.. motor has never failed me though! the clutch/tranny/lower control arm/radiator/etc have!

absolutely nothing has gone wrong with mine so far im still on the same clutch that was in it wen i bought it dont kno wen it was replaced radiator hasent failed once (so far) only problem im having right now is i ahve very very low oil pressure but im sure that is do the 5w30 oil that is in it . and as for the lifter tick iv herd that getting a O.E. oil filter from the dealer can actualy "cure" the lifter tick... kinda leary on that but its worth a try for a 5 dollar oil filter and mayb som thicker oil

All DSM oil pressure gauges always seem to read low. My laser typically sits on or slightly above the mark before the halfway point. At idle it's barely above the bottom. My talon is the same way, although during driving it has slightly more than my 1.8L

Really the only thing I've ever seen "cure" the 1.8L lifter tick is new lifters. It's just something the 1.8's are plagued with. The 2.0's also like to have it but aren't as bad as the 1.8L's

yea thats wut i figured and was planing on doing but ill worry about the lifters after i pull the motor apart and try to salvage wut i can, for now ill just keep the radio up

my 1.8 has 320k on the motor, tranny + clutch and the only problem iv ever had with it is the o2 sensor went out (kind of expected). its only had 1 other owner than me, and the dude was meticulous about getting it serviced. :thumb:

My 94 Talon also has the 1.8L in it. It also has hella lifter tick, as I like to put it it sounds like a bikini clad girl standing at the north pole wit nothing else on but sunglasses LOL, thats how bad and loud it is. I got 145,000 original miles on mine. Although I have replaced damned near everything under the hood (rad, water pump, thermo, alt, batt, fan control switch(3 times LOL), power steering pump, belts, plugs, wires, pcv, clutch, slave cyl, cv axels, and almost all the gaskets) but I cant complain to much I got the car for only 400 bucks & the car sat for 7 yrs in the guys backyard. However, surprisingly enough though the 1.8s can really get movin once they hit their torque range. I've debated rebuilding and boring my 1.8 when it dies ### I like a challenge as much as everyone else, but I am gonna take on the challenge of doing the 4g63t swap instead, just gotta findout what all I need to do the swap. Anywayz, good luck on the build bro and welcome to DSMs

.and doing lifters on a 4G37 is nothing compared to the 4G63 since the motor is the non-inteference type so you don't have to bleed lifters.

You can leave the cam in, just take off the lifter rail and replace the lifters. I did one in a half-hour.

Thing will tick like mad until the lifters gets pumped up with oil and then will run wickedly smooth and quiet afterwards.

If interesting in more stuff on the 4G37, head to this link .. http://www.dsm1eights.org/

Get forged pistons in either an 81mm or 82mm bore with a 10:1 compression ratio and a 270cam from Schneidercams. Also port, both manifolds and get a 3kgt throttle body.

You can swap lifters in a 4g63 without touching the cams too, so I fail to see your point. You can replace a lifter in a couple minutes. Also bleeding them takes a few seconds each which you should do anyways.
