ok ive been having problems with my tension pulley adjuster its been ripping off belts for some reason i think that pulley is not the original one. has anyone had problems with this?
and i tried buying the parts in the junkyard but it still gives me the same result, i think maybe a thicker tension pulley will do the job but has anyone tried putting a different pulley on there? tried my best grammar btw.
here is a picture of the size of my tensioner

and here is a diagram so u can have an idea of which one it is

and this is my own picture from when you open the hood... the belt only touches half of the width of the tension pulley

I had the same problem.....

Use this belt: 490K5

Remove the tensioner all together and use the powersteering pump as the tensioner.

this may be a dumb question but i have the problem as to were my pulley is completly gone leavin nothin but the bracket for the pulley. how do i go about using the power steering pump ad a tensioner?

You either use the belt mentioned above, or just get a new pulley.

^adjust the power steering pump, it's got some play on the bracket to adjust tension

whats super ### is that autozone nor advance auto nor performance auto carry the tensioner pully. They can't even order it for some reason. BUT you can replace the bearing thats inside the pulley. Its held in place by a snap ring and is easy to do.. although i like the other method listed above about just removing tensioner all together and using powersteering pump as tensioner.

that lil ass tensioner requires even littler hands to work on or remove.

psycho method is wayyyyyyyy better and the best pulley mod yet.I did it for just the hell type a thing and it works perfectly

Thank You for the tip

My steering is making grinding noises every time i turn the wheel. I've tried tightening the tension, but it doesn't seem to help. Do you think that has anything to do with it?

That's sounds like a great idea, Jon. I'll have to give it a try. My standard tensioner seems to allow slack into the belt ever so often.

That is a great idea. This wouldve been a great mod to do before I removed the AC as its much easier to adjust the tension this way. I had the same problem with the belt gaining some slack ever so slightly.

Maybe this was said and i missed it, but the 490k5, when i search for it im getting a belt listed for a 1990-1992 Daihatsu Rocky. Im in Germany, what would i need to ask a parts dealer for here? should i ask him for a belt for a 1990-1992 Daihatsu Rocky? LOL. Is it not the same length as the original belt for the 420a? The bearing on my idler pulley is bad, but i have to leave the country in about 2 weeks, so ordering from the states to here is going to take too long, and i wanted for this reason to buy it locally and remove the tensioner pulley all together. . any ideas?

I'm using my power steering pump as a tensioner as well. It works great, and is a much easier way to tension the belt. Simply grab the ps pump and pull on it as you tighten the bolts for it and voila! you're tensioned :)

i have a problem with my tensioner pulley. it squeels and screams when i crank it, and it sometimes does this at an idle. I've replaced the stock belt once, alternator belt once, the A/C pump (for other reasons, just sayin), and the idler pulley twice. ive belt dressed the shit out of the belt with little to no response. if you pay close attention, i have a very slight, almost unnoticable wobble in the harmonic balancer. could this be causing the idler pulley to scream? it's my last resort to replace it and the pulley ($70 on rockauto.com). i would appreciate an even cheaper suggestion.

You can also use the belt K050486 made by master-pro its around 12-13 bucks at your local O'riley's auto parts. the belt is 21/32"X49 1/8". or 49 1/8 inches long works perfectly and you don't really need to remove the mount bracket if you don't want to just a matter of opinion. :rocks:

I believe that I put that in there. Sometimes the tensioner bolt won't come out. So other than try to rip it out, I put instructions on how to take out the mount also.

Why, oh why am I reading this now and not like 3 weeks ago when we hadn't installed the belts yet. :banghead: That little demon of a tensioner is squealin' like mad.

Well, luckily the splash shield is still off the car from that side. Gotta make this mod asap.

EDIT: We have a BOMZ UDP in place, so I realized this part number won't fit. I dug up the specs for all these belts and ended up with this:

Stock belt: 51" (1295mm)
Belt to use w/UDP: 49.5" (1255mm)
490K5: 49.75" (approx 1265mm)

So, since we have the UDP then the corresponding belt in our case should be 1.5" shorter than the 490K5. This gives a belt with a length of 48.25" (approx 1225mm). We'll get one of these and give it a try.

Im having the same tensioner problems in my GS. i really like bullettdsm's mod but if you delete it will that take away any power or cause any damage at higher speeds or while taking off?
