So I had just finished swapping my old 420A with one i got from an old Eagle Talon. However it seems to be running a lot hotter than the old one. Everything in the cooling system is new, and the system is burped. My confusion is from being told that the numbers i'm coming up with are completely normal. so here are the numbers:

under 5 minutes after shutting the engine down
Upper radiator Hose 217F
Lower Radiator hose: 158F
Top of radiator 210F

Timing belt In between cams: 158F

OUTSIDE TEMP: approx. 86F

Its hard to get an accurate reading from the radiator because its shiny but the thermometer said that near the lower hose it was colder than the actual hose by about 20-30 deg.

are these numbers normal? It doesn't seem like things like the timing belt and the hood prop should not be so hot that I cant touch it without burning myself.

the coolant temp sensor doesn't match up to the harness i have. But the fail safe causes the fan to run 100% of the time. The sensor for the gauge works and it says the temp is normal.
also the o2 sensor got messed up so the car starts surging after idling for a couple minutes but i doubt that will cause it to over heat.

Another thing, the radiator sat dry and had a good amount of contact with the sun on 80 degree + days while i was doing the swap. so i'm thinking its entirely possible it could be clogged. Another theory is that the block has crystalized coolant inside the passages from sitting.

The radiator shouldn't have gotten clogged from sitting in the sun. The block could be part of the issue. I'd drain some coolant and check it. Do you happen to be using the thermostat/thermostat housing that came with your new engine?

im using the housing that came with. replaced the thermostat before i installed the engine

its almost 100F today. I had too much coolant in the system so i emptied the reservoir a bit and burped again. Drove it around, then to town to fill the tires and get some distilled water and radiator flush. The car ran fine according to the OEM temp guage (which i heard isn't reliable). Got back home, about 2 hours of driving and the car seems to be alright now. It only started getting hot when i was sitting still but it seems like the fan just wasnt turning back on. Gonna flush the radiator and replace the coolant temp sensor with the correct one so i can plug it in.

If the fan runs 100% of the time but you have problems overheating when your not moving make sure the fan is spinning the right direction.... I'm not sure how that would happen but it sounds like your not getting air flow. Or maybe you had an air pocket and driving it around worked the air out.

My OEM temp gauge in my circle track car reads right in the middle when my aftermarket gauge is reading 220 so I wouldn't put too much faith in the oem gauge. Most cars just stay in the middle until they are almost already overheated in my experience. My old dodge shadow was the only car I ever had that seemed to read correctly. The gauge would build up towards "H" and then swing towards "C" when the thermostat would open

ill check it out. I have an aftermarket temp gauge too but the fuggin wire isn't long enough to even feed into my engine bay LOL. ill let you know what I find.

the o2 sensor doesn't matter cause the ECT isn't working. without the coolant temp sensor connected, the ecu will use 114F as the default coolant temp so the ecu will stay in open loop. It only uses the o2 for closed loop.

also I just opened the cap to see if it was low and coolant surged out as if the engine was hot. the engine is cold right now its 86F out side
Maybe the new engine had junk in the system clogging the radiator. Just something you may want to check.
