Ok the syncro is going out in my 5-spd and well double clutching so i dont grind is starting to get old plus i can't down shift without grinding into second period. I have access to the tools and resources of a rebuild or syncro replacement. But I'm looking at a completely new tranny instead if possible. I'm getting conflicted information about what trannys will work on my 2g 420a. so here goes the actual questions.

1. If i go with a rebuild and or syncro replacement is there anything else i should address while I'm inside the tranny?

2. I'm looking for a slightly longer 1st gear ratio tranny with a decent accel/top ratio, what would be a good replacement for those specs or what m/t would I be able to swap?

There are a few gear ratio modifications you can do to the trans using PT Cruiser/Neon ACR parts vs. the 2G NA trans, as well as upgrading the hub and slider keys to the updated design, modifying the shift detent spring assembly to prevent gear popout, upgrading the 3rd gear and shift rail to the newer version that has a limiter on the rail, along with using a modified Maddog shifter that has built-in limiters, or custom machining the shift rails with built in limiters so you cannot over-shift the gears causing hub/slider and gear damage.

On a side note, as for higher capacity, either using a custom gearset out of better material, or shot-peening and cryo-treating your gearset is the best choice for increasing torque capacity of the parts. Cost wise, shot-peening and cryo-treatment is what I normally use when gear choices are limited to increase durability and longevity.
