Ok this is a relatively new problem I've just discovered. It seems as if I can't shift into 3rd without it sometimes popping out. Nowadays I have to shift into 3rd at an angle (pushing a tad bit toward 5th but not quite) and everything shifts perfectly or just hold the clutch pedal in a little longer, but I shouldn't have to do this. Anyone know what the problem could be? Every other gear is fine.

damn dude i have the same problem with my 93 awd. 3rd pops out almost every time, either crawls into neutral or litterly pops with a noise. i went to adjust my cables and couldnt so i replaced them and it still pops out  and my tranny whines quite loudly for w/e reason now   . does urs grind if u ease it in? i slam mine in and hold it(oh and yea 2 hands on the wheel is a good idea goin 40mph thru multiple s curves with water on both sides). 3rds the only one that does it on mine too.i wonder if its a bent fork or lever or something? cuz when i look at the cables under the console it seems the stick moves forward more in 1st and 5th than 3rd  is it the stick that holds it in gear? shouldnt i be able to take off the cables and on the tranny itself shift it to a gear and leave it be on its own?? man i feel ur pain, and then some.

Mine was doing this in second and fourth. Sometimes the bearings get chewed up for whatever reason and then the intermediate shaft doesnt stay centered and thats why it pops out. Sounds like its time for a rebuild or you can do what I did and buy a used one.

how much do they usually run? and ill prob have somebody else swap it since im a moron :shhh:

If you have basic mechanical skills, you can do it, just go to www.vfaq.com and look up the Clutch Replacement, since you have to take the tranny out to do it anyways.

Its really not that hard, I did it myself, just needed 2 people when it came time to put the new tranny in. Just print the directions and follow them line by line...its that simple.

i couldnt even get my own head off..... too ####ing hard to get behind there and bolt heads sheared off when i tried to take off the down pipe and some heat shield. and my dad freaked out every time it would grind into second i dont think hed ever like this. is $425 a total rip off for a stupid idiot like me who prob doesnt have a chance in hell of doing it right? this didnt start until i swapped shift cables, i dont know how or why but i ####ed it up, its deff. my ####ing fault. prob all the ####ing shit i sprayed on the shift bushing and all the yanking i did

Calm down man. Doing the trans isn't hard at all ... I'd say "easier" than the head ... just more time consuming. Give it a shot ... if you can't do it then take it somewhere. $400 seems to be the going rate for a clutch install so you'd be looking in that range for a trans swap.

yea well as soon as my dad gets back this will prob give him a hear attack when he freaks out. and i wonder how many times hes gonna say i told u so? how much is a stock or like stock spec clutch? man this car has a dent and then engines really iffy i dont know if its even worth it. 93talon tsi awd with 130k and a crap tranny, how much could i get for it? theres a geo metro in the paper for 700 im looking at, 45mpg! even tho ive only driven 450miles in this talon i sure as hell dont wanna give it up! i guess if i can drive one of my dads cars until i get mine running thats what ill prob do. the guy who did my head has one and says he knows its still good and prob rebuilt that i can have for 300 plus mine. or should i just drive the car there and let him do clutch and all for like 850 in 3-4 days?

and i put gm synchro in it hoping itd stop it and all and be the miracal this car needs and deserves. holy crap when the cars off i can shift it into gears like smooth as dragging a warm pin the thru butter. and a couple of times 2nd didnt grind at all even revved way up there, other times it grinded quite bad LOL.

I doubt that I need a rebuild. The clutch and flywheel were just replaced by DSMotorsports and they claimed that the tranny is in otherwise good shape. My guess is that my torn motor mount has something to do with it.

probably, replace it since its pretty easy and cheap. just make sure to properly support the engine or tranny with a jack(try not to ever jack the oil pan).
