Hi Guys,

I have a 99 GS (420A). I took off from my house today and heard a squealing noise. I thought maybe it was the accessory belt. Wasn't making any other noise so I wasn't too concerned.

Well, all of a sudden it just died. I was close to home and was able to coast back. After I parked it I tried to start it again. It cranked over but wouldn't start.

Do you all think it is the timing belt or something worse?

Thanks in advance for all your input.

Don't worry I've been there too. I drive a s uzuki samurai all the time so I can work on my talon. Hopefully someday it will be totally done. I'm very anxious to start though. Still gotta finish collecting parts. My biggest concern is how I will work out the fuel system to run about 8 psi on my stock 420a rebuilt motor.

Hi Guys,

Just got my car back. Runs great. They had to replace the head. They found some major pitting on the head surface and they found me a rebuilt head. I've attached some pictures of the head and the invoice. The good thing is, they didn't charge me any more for the rebuilt head.

Tell me what you think.

The pitting is fairly common to see, mainly in engines that do not have anti-freeze in them.

Save the head incase you ever need it, some grinding a bit of weld and a surface and you will not know the pits are there.

I asked the shop what they were going to do with the head and they said they were going to throw it away. I told them no way, I'd keep it. I wondered if it was salvageable. Thanks for the heads up. I'll probably just sell it though.

I'd say you came out pretty good! All of that should keep you going for a long while. As far as the head goes, I'd say with a lot of milling and welding the pits it may be reuse able. Congrats on having the car back. You sure got a heck of a mechanic

The guys were pretty good to me. Full timing kit, rebuilt head, new plugs, thermostat, radiator cap and oil change ($920.98- Parts). $550.00- Labor.

If anyone is looking for a head, I now have a spare.

Thanks to everyone for their input, I learned a lot from you guys in a very short time. :hellyeah:

glad to hear you got your car back in good shape. LOL a metal gasket could never live on that. i was wondering the same thing....what causes the pis, but its been answered, Thats good to know! happy for you man! :hellyeah:

It sure is nice to have it back, especially with no other surprises. I thought for sure when they told me that they would have to get me a new head, they would want more money.

What's really weird is I always kept a mixture of antifreeze and water in the cooling system, don't know why it did what it did. They also told me that my thermostat housing is corroded like the head and I should replace it soon. That's next on the list. Thankfully, that's a cheap fix.

Hey Guys,

Back again. I found a new problem. I'm hearing a rattling sound coming from the top end. There is no noise at idle but when you give it a little throttle you can hear the rattle. It's not a constant noise, just happens at different rpm levels. Almost sounds like a lifter but not sure. Any ideas?

As always, I appreciated all of your input.

Back again. Still having the noise problem. Had the lifters replaced but noise is still there. I've uploaded a video, hopefully you can hear what's going on.

Looks like the video didn't embed properly. Video can be seen on youtube at "Eclipse top end noise". Thanks for looking.
