Okay so as the title says I own a 95gsx auto. Within the last few days I noticed a hesitation when placing the car into "D". Example backing up and coming to a complete stop and putting the car into Drive it would hesitate for several seconds or until I slightly stepped on the gas. I figured the tranny with 143k on it was beginning to "slip".

However, the problem was not consistent. It would act up periodically. I checked fluid level. Performed a flush and filter change and double checked all of the connectors on the transmission. Today I go to the store and getting ready to leave the car wont go. I play with the selector and finally get the car to pull itself. The odd thing was the car wouldnt only move while the tach was between 2-3k RPMs. Anything less anything more and it wouldnt budge.

I drove to the store and bought a can of Trans-X. I figured if it will get me by for a few days, mind you I drive about 6blocks round trip to and from work and rarely go out of town, then why not try it? I put the can in and let the car idle for several minutes. Still same issue although when the car did start moving it shifted better and didnt "slip" at all. I pulled out onto the Highway making a right hand turn and the car just died. I have noticed a strange noise coming from the timing belt area, but I already check the belt. Its still intact. I noticed the fuel pump isnt priming and the car just cranks over. Its back at my house and Im wandering where to start. I dont think CW is an issue because its auto, AND we just replaced the rods and Mains and everything was still in spec about 5k ago.

I forgot to mention my buddy took my car for a joyride and stated he revved it to about 4k and dropped it into "D" and it "burned all four tires" :notgood: I just about hit him in the face, but this was about a week ago and the tranny seemed fine up until about a day or two ago.

I have already checked fuses and the obvious. I am stumped. If anybody knows of anything that could cause the tranny issues and then the sudden no fuel no fire please chime in.

Sorry for the long write up I just figured it would be easier than carrying on for weeks with this thread. Im already looking into a rebuild on the tranny EVEN IF it ends up being seals/valve body etc. I have a feeling it isnt hard parts.

Thanks In Advance,

If your car feels like it is in neutral and not going anywhere then your tranny pump or torque converter is failing. Common on an auto especially with the miles. Car dying and not starting up could be many things like fuel pump. But since you said the engine was redone 5K miles ago your timing could have slipped. You said the belt is fine, but what you cannot see is underneath the lower timing belt cover which is the tensioner, oil pump, etc. Another common thing to go bad on a 95 is the CAS which is behind the cam gear. A real pain in the ass to change. Figure out if you are not getting fuel or not getting spark. There's a lot of things that could cause your issues. The not starting part has nothing to do with the tranny.

I like your assumption that it has nothing to do with the tranny, but this has snoballed. Ive never had any issues with the car not starting. It had a new fuel pump installed about 8months ago when I bought it, and the timing is still correct. I checked the belt and removed the plug rotated it to TDC and the cam dowels are at 12o'clock. I dont hear the pump priming any longer with the key on. I checked the fuses but they all checked out.

While the tranny was slipping during take off it just died like turning off the key, it was during a right hand turn. Thats why the thought of CW popped into my head, but Like I said the bottom end was gone through 6months ago...

Update. I checked today and sure enough no fuel no fire. The pump runs still whenever I run a jumper wire from the battery to the test connector but it still doesnt fire. Im thinking maybe CAM or Crank sensor. Im going to plug it into my handheld tomorrow and see if im getting a tach reading output from the OBDII port on my scanner. All in all this sucks walking to work :(

Yes, check the CAS. You said you noticed noise coming from the timing belt area. I had a similar problem. My balance shaft belt snapped and hit the CAS cracking it in two. This prevented the car from firing. It would crank to holy hell, but no fuel, and no spark. Check this right away and report back.

well the tranny was slipping or acting up but then it died. The timing belt is still intact, but idk about the CPS. Ill have to pull the cover. Im just wandering if the two problems are both electrical.. The timing belt is still in tact and can get the pump to come on manually but it doesnt prime when I turn the key on. Thats what bothers me. The CPS or CAM sensor being bad shouldnt have any effect on the initial prime of the fuel pump should it?

Yes. It is just like pulling your engine fuse. With a broken CAS you won't get fuel or spark. Did you try and pull any codes? I bet you there is one there.

no codes, BUT I talked my dad into towing it to his shop and we are just going to pull the motor and tranny and go through and fix everything. I found a 1g for sale for $300 it runs the kid didnt have the flywheel stepped properly and thinks the trannys out  BUT hopefully it will be my DD its FWD 5spd. Im thinking the CAS is the issue though everything else checks out okay, BUT I still cant figure out why the FP isnt priming when I turn on the key.

In these cars, unlike most other japanese cars, the FP only starts when key is in Start/RUN position and engine is cranking over...

I'm pretty sure he is right. So I wouldn't be so worried about it. I'm so certain that it is your CAS. You can get them from ExtremePsi for around $80. I don't think they are listed on the site though so you will have to call them.

I think im going to go with a 1g CAS after I find the exact problem. I had planned on doing this before this mess so that I could adjust timing. If the CAS went Im positive the BS belt probably took it out. The tranny still worries me though :( EVEN if I get this thing up and going again I have to deal with that

Shame I just sold a fresh rebuilt 95 GSX trans about 3 months ago for $500> Doin a MAnual swap in car I got stuck with - so It'll be for sale soon as well.... Good luck with the diagnosis, get that timing cover off and post up your finding's.

I found a donor car at my old salvage yard. I can rob the clutch pedal assembly and hydraulic lines. I think thats going to be the biggest headache. Ive researched and heard the rear pod has to be changed when doing an auto to 5spd swap as well? Is this true? Im NON LSD atm, If I can run the same rear diff I think I can located a fairly cheap 5spd swap.

Im planning on towing the car to dads and starting the motor pull this week. Work has been insane I have 105+ hours this pay period and I maybe be working another 8hour shift before its over.
