2G Ram Air Headlight?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

i have a 420a turbo, so my motor is facing the other way.
the end of the ram air tube is about 2" from my filter under the hood.

Is no one running short route intercooler piping? Cause seriously, a whole heck of a lot more air feeing it in the wheel wheel, a whole heck of a lot colder air, and ah, I don't have a big hole in a messed up head-light........... and ah, isn't there also the potental of the cops messing with you? for "safety"? Just throwing good info out there so other can make decissions of their choice educated.

i agree, but at the same time don't. most people with turbo arent too worried about getting the "coldest" air because that's what the intercooler is for (technically). the reason to do this is so that your getting the air straight from the outside in the direction of your filter. This way, you don't have to fight for the air through your fender, bumper, hood ect; which recirculates small amount of the heat into your system from your engine to begin with. Not to mention your radiator produces heat and your collant fans dont circulate that out, it pushes it into the block. So having your filter in between them is a bad idea to begin with. the Reason most people don't have the intake lower in the wheel well or behind the foglight cover (assuming you don't have fogs) is because you pick up water and dirt and mud particles into your engine by having it so low. You may not think about it, but you drive over a puddle, it splashes everywhere under your car. Big enough puddle or even just damp air filter, you have hydrolock. Congratulations! You drive on a gravel road, sure the gravel isn't going to get into your air filter, but it will give it a beating and the gravel dust is so very tiny it's just a matter of time before your engine says forget this.

However, something that would be more visually appealing and more practical would be the Corbin hood mod.

Thats why i went to the junk yard and bought a light with 2 broken mounts to make mine, honestly the light i bought looked like crap, so i made this ram air one out of it. Personally, i like the look too...but thats just my $.02

as far as intercooler piping... i have the shortest route i could possibly make on my car...420a's dont have to many options when it comes to i/c piping so when i fabbed mine up i made it as short as possible.

NICE HOOD!!!! but let me clearafy a couple things on my set-up.
I get direct air a heck of a lot more direct........ my filter sits right where the stock SMIC sat, can't get more direct then that. The only thing that can pick up heat prior to the turbo, is well, the piping........ and no way around that. Then like mentioned earlier....... you are correct........ water+engine=hydolock....... 2 things on that. 1st that's why I said earlier I designed mine in 2 pieces so I can just unbolt the piece that goes through the stock UICP hole and place it in it's "normal" spot. 2nd (and was mentioned earlier) do you realize just how much water a turbo'd car would have to go through, I don't know the exact number, but a heck of a lot more then a NA car, get sucked up, through a VERY hot turbo, down around and through a intercooler, then finally it takes the normal path of a NA, I would assume it would either be gone or setting by that point..

it really isnt that hard just get a spare and give it a shot.

The piece of 3" stainless running through olmy's headlight is worth about 42 dollars ;). Not to mention it's powdercoated on top of that. That isn't just your every day PVC Lowes job. I'm glad you're happy with it olmy.

I guess it is a good alternative if you have a sidemount intercooler, but there are other cheaper, more practical things you can do to cool AIT's. A few guys have mentioned, but why not just put the air filter down in the sidemounts spot (If you have a FMIC). This is a cool idea, but I would never pay $250 for someone to hack up one of my headlights and lose function of my high beam as it is required to pass inspection here in St. Louis. Overall a good original idea.

BTW: You should have just taken dremel or cutter wheel to it yourself.

yeah, the one that cost 250 looks a ton better than mine, but i'm a college student on a budget, and dont like asking for help from others on my car...so i gave it a shot. i dont have a spare 250 layin around, so i took the cheap route...and the 208 bucks i saved doing it my way, got me a new exhaust.

Funny enough, I do drive around with the spare headlight in the trunk....It is just 3 bolts/2 electrical plugs and swap complete.

I had a similar goal, clean air to the filter, but i needed to retain both head lights in this state.

Ill post some pics it might be an interesting alternative to the ram air light if any one is interested.

EDIT:
rather than thread jack ill just post some pics in a new thread. its almost not worth it but why not share.

I don't plan on this mod, nor do I have a 2g, but I do have a question. What about making inserts for the head vents? Like making the back of the head lights ducted, but modifying another set of headlights so you can slide the lights in like an insert. Pop it in with a few nuts on the back to hold it in place. Viola, head lights and no water getting in.

Or is that just more work than it's worth? (Personally if I was going to do a headlight mod, I'd made it easy to swap. But that's just me.

Tim, did you do the headlight mod yourself or did you have someone else do it for you? If so, how much?

This headlight mod looks better than olmyt's...no offense

These are two different mods...he can't drive his car at night that way (legally), he has to switch headlights...I don't ;)

I did it myself.

It took a couple of hours to get it all taken care of, as you start out with a cutter bit, an air saw, and alot of patience with a razor blade.

I would be willing to do one for whoever if they supply the headlight assembly.

I am sure that I could plastic-weld in a divider section that just does where the high-beam area is if it was necessary.

As well, like I said, it is used for the track. I put in the normal light for the street.

If you look closely at the passenger-side lower air duct that ran to the SMIC in the past, I have a 3" duct running up to the intake pipe as well.

Bringing this thread back since I have a new picture to share.
