okay here is the ordeal,
i have a spun rodbearing and one of my rods are shot? my pistons look fine from my point of view, im going to ask a machinist sometime this weekend. . the pistons have like a few hundred miles on them by the way,
i found some 2g pistons, would it be worth just goin with them there used, and need to piston rings, what gain am i looking at from this? i know it'll raise my compression level, but i thought on a turbo motor you want a lower compression so you can run more boost? sorry for the newb ?'s just trying to learn here

If you are just doing a basic rebuild then yeah use the stock pistons, pull out the balance shafts while you are there... How is your crank since you meantioned you had a spun bearing? are you using a different crank or are you just getting that one machined and polished?

Lower compression will allow you to run more boost and more timing with less octane than higher compression.

Higher compression will make better use of the boost it's seeing (example: a well-tuned 15psi on a 9.0:1 engine has the potential to make more power than a well-tuned 20psi on a 7.8:1 engine), but is also more fragile to tuning as there is more heat generated per combustion cycle. Higher octane fuel is often mandatory with higher compression pistons.


It costs a good bit to machine 6-bolt rods to accept 7-bolt pistons, but it's worth it if you can get a good deal on the pistons. The other option would be to just buy a set of 6-bolt aftermarket pistons in a compression ratio of your choice.

If the pistons are new and are undamaged, why are you considering changing them already? What happened that caused the rod bearing to spin and generate enough heat on that journal to turn the rod blue?
 
2g's are an upgrade on a 1g. you're gonna have some money into the machine work on the rods to use this set up. the compression is not that much higher. if you want 1 stop shopping check with dsm graveyard they're great guys and they will have what you need already machined all in one package
 
yea ive covered that on here a few weeks ago about the crank, i bought a virgin motor and am just swappping everything but tis an n/t so i gotta get the rods off the pistons, but i was just looking around and found a set so i considered it but we'll prob just run my stock ones,
