2G or not 2G... that is the question.

Correct me if I'm wrong but they did put a 7 bolt in later 1G's.

No, you are right. Exactly right. I have a 7 bolt engine in my 1gb. So can I assume that it already has the 2g "big" pistons in it? And the crappy 2g rods?

you would be correct,

BUT, realize these rods have been constantly proven to hold up to 400WHP, its all in how you tune ;)

Well since you put it like that... it's all good. :thumb: I dont plan on making more than 400whp.

Since I'm about to rebuild I suppose I should just get new rings? Or is the popular thing to do is to go with an oversized bore such as .020 over? (Of course with larger pistons.)

EDIT: Are there any distinguishing numbers on the 2g piston to identify it?

no reason to bore the cyls unless you have to. Boring out Cylenders is mostly just a trick for big block guys to get more power, we don't have much metal to give so there's no point in it (and the gain is so small its not worth the trouble)

if your doing a rebuild definatly get new rings and have the cylinders re crosshatched, if you have some extra scratch pick up ARP head studs & rod connecters, for the main bearings and rod bearings ( get all new ones also) you can go with the stock mitsu, or if you feel like spending some cash get cleavites (really stock mitsu's are good enough) have a machinie shop check the block & deck it if it needs it (make sure you get your head decked too so the headgasket seals correctly) its best to do it right while your at it, you'll thank your self when you have a relyable car later on :) :thumb:

edit : I dont know of any numbers that distinguish the pistons, but if you have a 7 bolt your currently rebuilding, you can take a look at one of em and see :)

Hey thanks! Definitely all good advice. I do plan on replacing the head bolts with ARP studs and the bearings with new ones as well. BTW here is a shot of what Im working with.

RiceKiller_TSi you didn't come here to make a choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it.

No, all 1G's have the 7.8:1 pistons. Regardless of 6 bolt or 7 bolt.

Thanks to everyone who replied!

I've decided to go with the 95' pistons since I already have the rods for them. Shouldn't need any machining done to get the proper fit.

Ok, I've aquired some very nice 2g pistons brand new for less than $200 bucks complete with rings. (I will post link if anyone wants to buy some)

Question is... Is there a different head gasket that I will need to use once my block is bored .020 over? Will any 7 bolt Mitsu gasket do the job or will I need a specific year (like 95') ?

Holla back.
