2g or not 2g that is the question. (Yet More Irrational CW Fear)

First, I would like to say great site. Lots of great info. for you dsm owners. I am a former owner of a 93 talon tsi. It was my first car, and I loved it.I bought it used with 60k drove it until it was falling apart at 150k(I was young and did'nt take great care of it) I traded her in for a 97 Dodge intrepid in 99. Anyway, I was seriously thinking of trading that turd in for another DSM a 2g, but searching the web about 2g DSM's I come across numerous articles about crankwalk. Even people who claim to take excellent care of their stock 2g DSM seem to be afflicted. I must say this has me quite skeptical or leery. So I have a few questions. Does anyone have any ideas on the odds of this? Should I definitely look for one with a 1g motor swap? Are 2g's with auto trans.affected? Is there a certain year/s 2g that are worse than others? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is no shortage of people who will voice their opinion on this, but I think its a bit over-rated. I think the actual percentage of people who get it is fairly low...for every 1 person who got it and complained about it, there are probably dozens who's motors are just fine but don't say anything. I've maybe heard of 1 2g auto that walked, so I guess its not that common. I'd still go with a stick, but its your choice.

My advice is to check it out for common CW signs and if it passes, buy it and enjoy it. If it walks, it walks...then replace it with a 6-bolt.

If you can find one with a 6-bolt in it, make sure they did a good job and don't have the common trouble codes associated with it. You can iron them out fairly easy, it just takes awhile to track them down.

Also, supposedly Mitsu but a 2-piece thrust beraing in the late model 2gs to combat the crankwalk problem, but I'm not sure what good it did.

^^Nice car blackgsx2g thanks for your reply.

Please tell me how I am being irrational.

i would say he is right, i have only worked on 2g's and have never ran into 1 that has walked its not as common as it sounds, i deffenatly don't worry about it.

but maybe thats cuz i want 6bolt anyways(95 pistons of course)

If you are THAT worried about it dont get a 2g.

if you like the car enough... then deal with it.

odds are around 1%
better odds with a un-modded a/t 98-99

Thanks for the reassurance folks. Yes, I do like the car enough. I guess I just needed a little persuasion. My vigor is renewed. :dsm: :thumb:
