I would just assume the second question is just a "moron" who bought one of those turbo whistlers or interfoolers and give props to the first...hmmm...

Did the OP ever find a solution to this? I know they are two completely different cars, but my 08 Lancer GTS makes the same sound, even "spools" down when i let off the gas. Sounds cool, but just wondering if its going to cause problems later..

On an EFI motor, yes. On a carbureted motor....not so much.

Last time i checked the 420a was fuel injected

I also you to have a whistle on acceleration when i first bought the car, but it went away when i put on my after market exhaust, never checked the stocker to see why, but assumed it was a small exhaust leak.

i'd say the intake or else someone told me that the stock exhaust from our non turbo'd cars make this sound? not sure but my talon gets mistaken for a turbo all the time and its funny cause its mostly from honda guys or chicks.

Yea i think its the stock exhaust, on my old talon esi it made the same noise. People thought mines was turbo cause of that noise.

I dont want to seem like a moron with two different whistles going off .

Since Ive posted this I kinda dropped it...I bought an 86 mustang GT as a project and have been DD'ing the Eclipse and not caring much about it anymore. I have valve cover/rear seal leak and I'm burning about a quart every 500 miles...add boost to that and goodbye...I'm not buying a gallon of oil every 2 weeks.

Im buying an Evo or STI around March, so I'm just gonna let the eclipse float and either keep it and find a GST donor and swap parts or sell the eclipse for whatever I can get

i also get this strange sound in my '99 RS, even with a CAI! its totally stock, too.... i thought i was the only one!

my guess is that it has to be some sort of air leaking somewhere along the exhaust or air filter which gives it that "whoosh" sound.

my car as well has been mistaken for being turbocharged. sounds pretty awesome though, im not gonna lie!

Same here. First the "spooling" was awesome, now I want a real turbo. Damn...

I thought the sound came from a crack in my exhaust mani. I replaced it with headers, and the sound is still there

Pretty expensive way to get the GST wheels. Not saying a 4g63 swap can't be done... but the motors don't swap. If it's not going to be your project car sell it or part it out to help the dsm community. Just my $.02

my RS does a whoosh sound like it has a bov in all gears. not soo much a whistling sound while accelerating but it happens as i let the clutch go after changing gears. people thought i had a turbo because of that too . it doesnt seem to loose performance or anything so i didnt worry about it.

IMO, I would first check to see if the noise would occur when just reving the engine while in park or nuetral. If the noise isnt there, might want to look into the tranny. Just my 2 cents

Hmm, could you post a sound clip of the noise by chance? Also, just to verify, does the sound come from the engine bay/ underneath/ or only from the rear?

Assuming you have a manual tranny, and the noise is coming from the engine bay, I would check to verify the noise is present with the clutch pressed in and disengaged. If the problem persists, my next piece I would check would be the pulleys, more so the power-steering pump. Yes, the power steering pump can still function while making a whirring noise(although 3 years if it were bad I would have assumed it would have broken by now.) If your external components on the block are in good shape (a/c, power streering, etc.) I would check your vacum lines by spraying some soapy water on them and check for leaks. If you still dont find anything, then I am stumped. Keep in mind, im just giving tips for a process of elimination to determine the source for your sound. I am also not a certified mechanic, I do this as a hobby and have been doing so for 14 years now. I do not have a lot of knowledge regarding the eclipse as of yet (just acquired a 99n/t for dd, but I do know a lot about my evo and several other vehicles that I have built over the years) I hope that this might help you with resolving your issue. Keep us posted

My RS started whistling when I installed the Jeep TB. I think it's the CAI sucking air. Might also check vacuum lines.

When I first got mine it did the same thing I ended up changing the muffler to a turbo muffler and I haven't herd it since. It made a spooling sound and what I gathered it was backpressure I'm guessing getting past my manifold gasket or one of the joints in the exhaust...

I think some of the whistling sounds other 420a guys are hearing is the amount of air being pulled past the TB butterfly flap or whatever you want to call it. Since at a certain RPM we're drawing in more air, the whistle gets louder. Both of my 2gnt's did this, stock air box or aftermarket. Nothing to be worried about necessarily unless you have exhaust issues to go along with it. Anyone else agree?
