hey all. I'm new to the DSM world and new to working on cars in general. I recently picked up a 95 tsi with a cel that came back as a bad map sensor. I'm a little confused by this as there seems to be differing answers throughout this forum as to whether 2g turbos have a map sensor or not. there is definitely what looks to be a sensor hooked up to the intake but I'm not sure if it's that or the mdp sensor. regardless, is it gonna screw up the car if I drive it like this?

Stock 2G turbo cars have a MDP sensor not a MAP sensor. the 2G NA cars have a MAP sensor.
The two are related but used for different things.
- MAP (absolute pressure): a transducer that measures the absolute pressure, with reference to an ideal vacuum
- MDP (differential pressure): a transducer that measures the pressure differential between two points

On a 2G turbo DSM the MDP sensor is used to detect changes in manifold pressure during EGR operation.
On a 2G NA car the MAP sensor is used along with a IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor and Engine Coolant Sensor to compute the mass airflow.

I wish it was a map sensor.

if it was these cars would have probably had a better reputation for being more reliable

Phh, the reason these cars have a reputation for being unreliable is because far too many people don't take care of them. Blame Fast and Furious not the MDP sensor.

The after market quality on parts from 3rd party sources does not help the reliability either. Gates timing belt idler pulleys, 2Gb CAM sensors, 2G coolant temp sensors, B-Shaft eliminator oil pump stubs have all let me down. You gots be be careful out there.
