My rear wheel bearings are shot! Need to replace them asap!
I was looking at the parts online, and now I have a question as to what I need.
I replaced my fronts before, and it was a whole bearing assembly, and I figured the rears will be too, but I found this part that seems to be just a bearing assembly:
http://oem.overnightautoparts.com/p...AWD-002&category=K&part=Wheel Bearing&dp=true

and it is only $93 shipped as opposed to the $132 minimum I've seen other rear hub assemblys for.
Now Im not sure if this will work or not, so I checked the caps page on 2gnt, & it seems that it may, but I haven't taken the rear hub apart yet, so I don't know. I figured I would ask here, and someone would be able to tell me.
Here is the link to the pic from the 2gnt page with the caps diagram:

Are all replacements for the rear like this? I don't see any different parts for abs or non abs?

And here is the link from an online dealer. It shows the bearing & hub as 2 pieces, but one part:

Consider yourself lucky if thats all that needs replaced. AWDs are known for that rear wheel bearing to get rusted in. I had one place work on it for 2 hours and couldn't get the bearing out. So i took it to another place and they actually bent their press to try and get it out. In the end, you have to replace like the whole knee assembly. So just be prepared for that.

:(
Is the knee the same for AWD cars & FWD cars?

And did the hub come in 2 pieces like in the pictures? Or was it all rusted together?

I just replaced mine. it was rusted together. but theres a trick take everything apart (parking brakes too) spray everyithing with pb blaster let it sit for a day. the get a three ear gear puller and see it it comes off(dont forget to take the bolts out that hold on the hub) If it doesn't come off you have to options. option 1 cut the axle and order a new one( not cheap) option 2 get a grinder with some 6 " cut-off wheels and be very careful and start cutting the hub in two. dont hit the spline on the axle or the threads at the end. its not that hard just take it slow. after you have cut throught about half way put the gear puller back on and see if it loosened at all if you get lucky you wont have to finish cutting.

to get deep enought you will have to cut the plate that holds the wheel studs that cuts fast so no problems with that.

remember saftey is no accident wear proper eyewear.

hope you dont have to do as mush as I did and hope this helps a little
Chris

So does the bearing assembly & hub come in two pieces when you take it apart (or is it supposed to at least?) or is a new wheel & hub assembly come in 2 pieces?
Assuming it does, should I be able to just buy the bearing assembly, or is the hub a wear item that should be replaced?
That is if I can get the axles out with out issue.

Ok, got the right side apart today. I killed the abs sensor in the process. It seems these things are just as frozen as any other part. Any tips on how to get them off without killing them?
I also have to repack the axles as the cover came off both ends. How do I get the end off of the rear diff? Is there a trick to it? I'll leave it there & repack it on the car if I have to, but it can't be too hard to take off.

I tried to knock the axel back once or twice while it was on the car, but no good. So I took the whole knee off. I used a lot of PB Blaster, some gas & actually used 1/2 a bottle of Coca Cola on it. I think the carbonation might float stuff to the surface like the foam from hydrogen peroxide on a cut does. :dunno: Then applied heat, and put the nut on. I was suprised when the axle moved after a few wacks with the sledge. I got lucky on this side, and this should be the worst one. Now if I can take the other side apart with out killing that abs sensor, I will be happy.

I replaced the bearing and hub as one piece, one part number. I ordered from JNZ tuning http://www.jnztuning.com/
They were $130 each side. I spoke with Eric there, and it was a good experience.
They only charged about $10 shipping, more than reasonable.
I did play with the old hub a little bit, and while it is possible to buy just the bearing assembly, and re-use the hub, it wouldn't be worth the extra time it would take to get the old hub off and on to the new hub to save $30.
