2g auto into 1g manual?

ok, here's the deal,,,

i have a friend with a 1st gen manual transmission. he is going automatic and awd.
i have a 2g auto transmission, and want a manual. is there anyway that we can trade? or will they not work at all. i have heard mixed things,,, that the 1st gen trans wont fit in the 2g's and vice versa. what is the REAL answer.

In the 1g's the tranny is attached to the engine. While in the 2g's the tranny has mounts in the bay. I hope I explained that correctly. You can take a 2g and put it in a 1g, but not the other way around.
