Hi Y'all, I had to replace my accessory belts, and it seems my belt is now rubbing against the lower timing belt cover, where before it wasn't doing that. Before I replaced the belt, it actually looked like it was on the wrong "teeth":

However, at least, it wasn't rubbing the timing belt cover. I replaced it and put it on what looks like the right place, but now it rubs the timing belt cover!

Now it looks like this:

I took a little video where hopefully I explain it better, but I hope someone has an idea, I'm a little afraid of it breaking through the cover and hitting the timing belt...

Is the timing cover fully bolted down? Is the belt tensioned correctly? How did it get out if the groove? Too loose?
I had the other (alternator) belt fall of last weekend, because it was too loose. The belt in the pictures 4PK698 was only removed and installed, didn't snap off or come loose or anything. Belt seems tensioned correctly. The first picture of it seemingly being in the groove wrong is how I bought the car, actually, haven't changed anything in that area until now. I noticed it when I bought it, but figured it was OK.

I was thinking maybe it's because the cover isn't OEM? The timing belt was changed more than 2 years ago, before I owned the vehicle.

Dunno about not oem. There are some bolts that are hard to get to. Make sure all of them are there.

Well damn, that would explain it! You’re sure? I heard a garage did the water pump replacement… thought it would be done well, guess that shows what I know. Is it hard to take care of this myself? For reference the hardest thing I did so far was replace my clutch slave cylinder.
Your water pump pulleys are installed backwards. Well atleast one of them is

Yeah in your video the gap between the belts is much too large, the outer pulley is for sure on backwards. It could also be that the bolts are loose causing the inner pulley to be misaligned.

It might also be the wrong belt on the steering pump, may want to double check part numbers

I took some more pics and I think you’re right, but if I flip the outer one, the inner one would still be rubbing, no? Or, are they both backwards? 🤔

Part numbers are OK, the outer one is 980 instead of 985, but that still falls within the tightening range, and I didn’t crazily tighten it or anything, so I do think one or both is backwards…

To correct it you would need to basically take off the alternator belt, then loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley, then loosen the steering pump to give that belt some slack, then fully remove the bolts on the water pump pulley to remove the pulley and flip it around.

You have to loosen the bolts on the water pump pulley with atleast one of the belt installed otherwise the pulley will just spin on its own when you try to loosen the bolts

The other reason why it could be hitting the timing cover is the power steering pump bracket is slightly bent towards the exhaust manifold and causing the belt to draw too far across the cover because the pump isnt aligned. I’ve had this happen before but usually this caused a massive amount of belt squeal when I started the car no matter how tight I got the belt
