I replaced my alternator 2 days ago, I didn't drive it at night until last night and the headlights were pulsing and so were the dash lights. My question is do I need a new belt? I tried loosening the belt and tightening it and still the same results with the pulsing.

I dropped by Autozone and they tested the alternator with their little station thing and said it was good, so I don't know? The belt appears fine and is only like 10k miles old.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Taylor.

As long as the belt is tight enough that you cannot turn it all the way over with your hand and not squeeling then I would assume the problem is not the belt.

When was the last time you replaced your battery? Have you had the battery tested?

You could always go ahead and replace the belt as it is not expensive and go from there. Good luck.

You may also want to check the terminals on the battery and make sure they are clean and have a nice tight clamp on the batter and check the condition of the alternator relay in your fuse box

I added more grounds to rule a bad ground out and it's still pulsing all of the lights and I can hear the fuel pump pulsing too. Whatever this is it can't be good.

I didn't realize that there was a relay for the alt I thought there was just a large 100 amp fuse. The battery was tested today at 12.6 car off and 11.0 cranking.

Does anyone know the procedure for testing the plug that goes into the alternator from the ECU? I doubt my ECU took a dump but that's always a possibility I suppose.

The other thing is I can hear it whining pretty good. Just not sure why I can hear it. Must be under load from something. I really don't know what though all I touched was the alternator and the radiator fan.

Looks like if I had searched better the consensus is to pull the alt and take it to a real shop and get it tested instead of the Zone. Guess I'm pulling it back out in the morning. Thanks.
