I am looking to get a set of your coversion brakets, But you mentioned
fitment poroblems on Eclispes. Was it just wheel offset problems or somthing
else?

Hi,

eclipses with 17" aftermarket wheels could have wheel offset problems
without spacers - it really depends on the wheel. It's very likely to not
fit with stock wheels.

Also, the ABS rings apparently get in the way of the brackets on some cars.
The brakes/knuckle/suspension seems to work on the GSX, but not other DSM
models. One customer tried to fit them on both a 1995 Talon AWD and a 1997
GST, and he had interference with the suspension (knuckle I think) on both.
I am not 100% certain it was installed correctly, though, because I never
received pictures that showed the problem clearly enough.

What kind of car are you thinking of trying?

No problem, I have to wait to figure out if I want to use a AWD or FWD
knuckle since there a little diffrent. Also what are the problems using
stock rotos that you mentioned?

The problem with stock rotors is there is very little clearance from the
outer circle of the rotor to the bridge of the caliper. There is about 1mm
clearance. The reason is the bracket design compromises to accomodate both
stock rotors and the 12.19" 2-piece rotors. The rotor hats for the
2-piece
rotor are available for special order at $250 per pair, but I don't have the
rotor rings to go with it. They can be found online for cheap (<$60 each)
or at a racing shop.

My thoughts-

I think think that it would workon a 1g since they have the same hubs as na 3kgts and thats what these conversions are made for. 2gs have not seemed to work, I would try and make custom ones since of the shelf wont work.
Take it for what its worth,

I just posted a thread... well not just posted but yesterday i did. Anyways, I'm looking for a machine shop that I can send an ACAD(AutoCAD, used in engineering and architecture) file to and have them machine it out of some type of alloy that will be strong enough to hold these brackets and not break. Someone help me out and we can all have shiny new vr4 brakes... :)

Anyways here is the link to my thread:

I installed a video surveilance system for a machine shop in torrance who had an amazing shop. They had two of those million dollar hydro cutting thingies, 20 different dudes working for them, huge shop.............I could get their number at work if you wanted. No better place for machine work.

Seriously, they were machining pieces for nasa's rocket ships.

Alright, heres their information.

I'm telling you these guys are the shit. They have access to any type of programming, machining, tooling or metal you could possibly need. All machining is within .000001 of an inch!!

Hope that helps!

Are you implying bOOstd GSX that you have solved the 2g suspension/chasie situation that was plauging us from supposedly not using these brake upgrades?

Lines can always be fabricated ,thats the easy part but I dont understand how 2g's are useing bigger brake kits and not encountering any chassis or suspension problems that this kit does.

I would like you( bOOstd GSX) to email this blue print so I can pass it over to a friend of mine to see if it will really work or not im shure he's been through these kinds of issues befor.

Again theirs no problem a group ofminds cant overcome. ;)

We cant let the 1g's have all the fun all the time.

Here is a sample of the drawing I'm doing. Drawn at full scale, ready to be CNC'd:

Shure that would look pretty if it was made with the correct mathematical lay out/structure.

Basacally it's not as easy as just slapping on some aem look alike bracket and say it would work.

You need to measure and see exactly wear the rotor lies and how the caliper should an could sit.

If you havethese calculations plz post them so we could cross refrence this material and iether concour or not concour with your findings. ;)

well here is the thing... I have the vr4 calipers. All you need is the distance from one mounting hole to the other on the calpier itself. Then you need the distance from one mounting point on the knuckle to the other. Then you find the radius from the center of the spindle to the outside of the rotor, which gives you the proper clearance for the caliper itself. There isn't just one caliper bracket that would work, there are actually many different variations that you could have machined that would be fully functional. Tell me what you think...

I see where your going with this but whats the clearence ,numerically from point a to b then c to d ? When you figure that out and find the clearence area you then still have to elaborate a bracket which positions the caliper exactly(X)amount away from the suspension arm which would be forwards, then apply the set calculations. Get me ?

Find the clearence point ,then measure the distances , but remember tha their has to be enough room for the caliper to play.

Hopefully this helps , out anybody thats willing to put in some r&d into this, but as far as giving concreat numbers ,(which I currently dont have yet) I wont for the simple fact that every bodys cars are different so my bracket wont be the same as you'rs at all.

Besides theirs no fun in diy if some one already did it for you, It's like me telling you how to build a coil on plug setup.

P.s My suggestions to anybody trying this would be to use blocks of wood as canvases to work with. ;)

You rooks could debate about this all day long, if you want to get this done right you can send me one vr4 caliper, I will drive to frontiers shop, and they will have a bracket prepared on cad with load ratings specced to a T within an hour. Or you could debate this all day long :)

hey all,
new to this forum and dsm's, but i've been reading alot of info on this site for weeks now. i'm interested in affordable big brake upgrades. i was just wondering if anyone has considered using Wilwood's Forged Billet Dynalite calipers. they have a 5.25" mounting pattern, are 4 piston calipers, and come in a variety of piston sizes, as well as fitting different brake rotor thicknesses. they also fit up to a 12.2" rotor. all of the mounting information is available on Wilwood's site. doing a quick price check, cskauto has VR-4 calipers for 119.99 + core (unloaded), while the Dynalites sell for between 118- 135 online (depending on piston size, the 1.75" are 118, the 1.62" are 135, and the 1.38" are 118). i'm sure a caliper bracket can be engineered (by someone with more experience than me ;) ), and a larger rotor that would fit our cars just needs to be found. also the Dynalites could be used on all four corners. also, i know someone's mentioned using the VR-4's master cylinder because of the 1 1/16 bore, but they go for over 200 on cskauto. Wilwood's aluminum universal master cylinder with a 1 1/16 bore go for like 113 on summit and jegs.... just a thought.

Personally I like how the guy made his set. Got interest in them, gave the info on parts then nothing.

He said he WAS going to sell them, but nothing so far... but also will not give up the info on how to actually make them. :thumbdown

If your gonna make them MAKE THEM, if not tell someone else how to so others can do this

ok... I couldn't keep things straight in this post. Hopefully by getting this post answered- this can clear up some of the questions in this thread. Will someone outline the things need to do the 3000 GT SL Upgrade and answer the following?

1- What years of 3000GT SL or equivalent cars will the calipers come from??
2- How big are the rotors?
3- Will these calipers directly bolt on to a 1g or 2g :dsm: :talon: :laser: / FWD or AWD, or is a caliper spacer needed also???
4- What wheel size/offsett is needed to clear the calipers?
5- Does this require a wheel spacer on a stock 1g DSM wheel... can i even use one?
6- Can I use a stock 3000gt SL wheels to clear the kit??

Thanks.... Ray

BTW as a side note... anyone with 17" wheels or larger - with the proper wheel clearance can upgrade pretty cheap!!! You will need 97+ Mustang Cobra Calipers and 13" Rotors, provided you design a caliper spacer, supply a different set of front brake lines, and get a centering ring for the rotor. Im running off the Baer Kit and those are the components used in the kit.

I'm about to put this kit on my car and was wondering about the thickness of the spacers you stated. Any idea? thanks
Got my calipers from speedCOncepts, the 10th anniversary red ones with plain cobra 34$ a pair rotors, 13"x1.10", with Porterfield R4-E pads...

Dude! you car looks sweet! But do you have the 1st or 2nd gen vr4 rotors? on you car and what size of rims in the car. I always liked those konig holes!. From what I know the 1st and 2nd gen vr4 calipers are the same. The rotors are the ones that are diffrent sizes. I have the 2nd gen intalled right know with the calipers and the rotors are 12 1/4" But now I need rims.

Pls let me know

thanks

I'll take pics as soon as I get a dig camera :dsm:

Robby posted previously that he used a 13 inch rotor not from the vr4 and fabricated brackets for the bigger rotor. I think it was from a mustang

where did you get the info that 1g and 2g calipers are the same for vr-4s?

The 1G and 2G VR-4 calipers are NOT the same, the 2G caliper has longer mounting 'fingers' extending from the caliper to accomodate the larger 12.3" rotor that the 2G VR-4 has. They are otherwise identical.

3si.org, But I dont know if this is tru.

Hey jdmspilner, I was "the customer". I bought the brackets and they did not work with my cars, 97 Spyder GST and 95 Talon AWD. I have pics of them on my Spyder I can't upload the pics cause they're to big. If you know how to make them smaller I'll send them to you. Also, you would need to get custom rotors, cause the GTO's hat is taller so it pushes the rim out. As far as clearing the caliper, I had no problem with my rims(17x8 38 offset Black Racing Pro N1's) I hope this helps you guys out.

Well I think I'm going to bring this project back to life. I have access to a machine shop that would be 100% will to make up some brackets. I need to save up some cash for 2g vr calipers, i already have 13" rotors...so we'll see if i get anywhere.....
