Would I be able to put 280/280 cams in without a tune? I know 272s are OK to do but I want to do things right the first time around. Doing a timing belt job so said hey why not cams and all that while I am in there. Going to be doing DSMLink soon so....

BC valve springs and retainers on the way.As well as Supertech reduced OD valve stem seals (just because). 272s it is then. If they will give me good power and lope (hey I like the V8 lope) then I will go with them.

If you plan on a 16g or a little larger the 272's will be fine to make some good power. But depends on what ones you get. Kelford makes a great set that performs the best IMO. BC cams are garbage.

I've swapped more cams not at the time of a timing belt replacement than I have with replacing the belt. It takes longer to remove the valve cover and install the timing belt tensioner tool than to actually swap the cams.

Unless you're planning on bolting a GT35R on sometime soon you'll never make use of the additional airflow...in fact, you'll probably notice a loss in your car's ability to build boost quickly and efficiently.

do comp cams need tune?

All cams need to be tuned for. You can never drop in a set of cams and expect maximum efficiency without a tune. You can run the car and expect gains but there will always be more if you tune the car for the set of cams.

Sorry I wasn't 100% clear. Yes I will be tuning, but not at the same time as the install. I was just wondering if the car will "run right" until I tune. Not expecting maximal gains just from swapping cams, just looking for "yes" or "no" the car will/won't run right.

Depends on what manufactured you go with. If you go HKS you'll have no problems and you will see a gain right away. BC is different or so I heard. They might need a quite a bit of degreeing, but I personally run BC 280s and it wasn't degreed and it's running perfectly fine.

Going to go with Delta regrind, since they are about 7 miles from my house and I can just stop the shop and see what they have to offer.

I like Delta. Good customer service.

Kelford cams are nice :)

Kelford 272s are FAR more aggressive than HKS272 or FP2 cams. They have 226 duration at .05" lift. Where as the hks and fp cams have 213 and 212 duration at .05" lift respectively.

Yea I have heard good things about Delta and theyre real close by so I figured hey why not? So does anyone know if a 272 / 280 combo would work? Or would there be no benefit from it?

Seeing as how you have a 16g, then NO there isn't a single 280 cam that your gonna benefit from, the cams you should be looking at are 264/272, and if your crazy a 272/272. Don't waste your money on BC garbage, take a look the HKS, COMP, or the Forced Performance equivalent, and unlike stated above DO NOT get the Kelford. They are again overkill.

Can't wait to test out my Kelford 272's. These babies are even more aggressive than the HKS 280's. At some point, you just need bigger cams if your deadset on staying with the same turbo, like I am. How they react to a restrictive turbine section remains to be seen. I personally think I'm going to see ALOT more knock, just like I did when I upgraded to HKS 264 cams.

What would be cool is to retrofit the EVO Mivec setup onto a DSM and use the EVO ECU to drive it. My buddy is currently tuning his intake MIVEC settings and the biggest advantage is being able to tame a wicked cam at various rpm points and loads. Simply amazing. Them EVO boys have all the fun:D

They may be more aggressive but they also lost less power in dyno tests in the low rpms compared to almost all other cams that where tested. I dont think they would be overkill, maybe if he never goes larger than a 16g. I mean any set of 272 cams is overkill for a 16g and has been proven in dyno tests.

If 16g is the most he will ever run then he should go with a 264/272 combo for best tq results.
