The title is a cliff's notes of what I've been thinking lately after reading waaaay too many posts about the Walbro 255lph HP and peoples' input on AFCs, injectors, and FPRs.

It all leads to one question :

After installing a 255hp, is an FPR and dyno tuning a replacement for getting an AFC?

The setup would involve stock injectors, an Evo III 16g, and whatever else I have in my modlist. :dsm:

You're gonna need bigger injectors regardless. You'll outflow those 450's in no time flat. And dyno-tuning requires a tuning tool (ie AFC, VPC, MAFT, etc.)

as i stated before, there will be an fpr installed with the 255hp, so that's no problem

I was under the impression that dyno shops have some equipment they use to tap into the ECU in order to do the tuning; that the dyno shop would be the tuning device so to speak.

So all cars that have gotten tuned at a dyno have had their own tool for tuning installed before going in?

An FPR doens't tune the car. No, shops don't "tap into the ECU" to tune your car, you have to have something (AFC, VPC, MAFT, EMS) to tune the ECu with. I'd recommend looking into what's involved with tuning before getting all your mods.

I see that you're pretty much stock so I don't see the point of dyno tuning. Set your base pressure at 44psi and you should be fine.

That's what dsmlink is for, reprogramming your ecu, your stock ecu can not be reprogrammed. You will need a safc after you go to bigger injectors, you can then dyno tune it and ask them to set your safc for you.

ok cool thanks for clearing all that up.

Looks like I'll be getting an AFC after all.

One last thing though, do I need a logger too if I'm going to a dyno for tuning or do they have equipment that they can tap into the ECU with to do the logging?

I was trying to say with the stock injectors , you don't need dyno tune or safc yet unless you have boost leaks or hacked mas...etc. If your car is functioning properly, the safc setting should be zero out as long as you set the fuel base pressure to 44psi.

Ok time to recap,

The proposed setup is stock injectors, FPR, evo III, and a walbro 255HP, and the minor mods I have already.

I WILL need AFC only if I'm taking it to the dyno for tuning, the car isn't running right, or I am increasing the boost levels?

Otherwise if I don't mess with boost and the car is running fine, I DO NOT need an AFC?

The only factor you have changed is the fuel base setting so there isn't a need to tune with an afc yet as long as you have an afpr and dial down the 255 pump over run to 44psi which is what the ecu is set for.

Instead of spending $150 for dyno tuning, I suggest use the money and get yourself a logger so you can monitor the knock count as you turn up the boost. The 450/evoIII should be good at around 16psi. If other problems like boost leaks and such surfaces, you should fix them instead of trying to tune them out with afc.

Wait until you're ready for 650cc injectors, install afc and have it dyno tune so you don't end up paying for dyno twice. Trust me, you will want bigger injectors soon.

Unfortunatly you cant measure knock on a 2g with a logger, you will need dsmlink which is a decent amount of $$.

Anyone know if theres a limiting factor as far as injector size goes and tunning with the safc? ive heard its not smart to go past 720cc or so, any truth to this?
