Now I've gone and done it. I just purchased a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS that sat for 7+ years. Got to towed to the house and began process of getting it back to running condition. Ran some tests and found fuel pump shorted. Removed fuel pump and found heavy contamination in the tank. Float for sending unit rotted off (somewhere in the tank now) and dark red substance in tank. My guess is a mixture of rust from corroded fuel pump assembly and varnish. Ended up pulling gas tank last night so I can flush the tank completely. Found the rest of the float (Yay!) in the tank and removed. Evap canister is bolted to the tank which sucks getting everything out but now it is flushed and drying. Awaiting new fuel pump and sending unit. Has anyone here had to drop a tank out of a 3rd gen Eclipse before? If so, what challenges did you face.

This forum is more 1999 and older frame in general.
You just need to make sure you flush as much of that terrible gas out, change that seal around the sending unit and hope for the best. Also fuel filter and general maintenance to help.

Got it all flushed out and drying now. Just hoping nothing else fried when the previous owners tried to start it. Looked for the fuel filter which should be located on the firewall behind the motor but did not see it. I will take a closer look at it tomorrow.
