My 2nd gear synchro is out of my '91. I'm weighing my options right now on a fix. I'm debating between sending it to jacks/TRE for a rebuild, buying a local used '92 transmission, or holding out for a 94+ with the double synchro 2nd gear.

I've never driven a 2nd gen turbo DSM. Do the revised double synchros on 2nd gear make much of a difference on how they shift? They were revised again in 97, are they noticeably better than '94-'96?

Thanks!

the revised double sychro 2nd shifts a lot better but the 3/4 setup in your current unit is way stronger.

you can have the best of both worlds if you so choose

also the 97-99 2nd gear has slant cut engagement teeth which is an improvement

TMZ Performance is another tranny rebuild source specializing in DSM's. You should included TMZ in your otions & Tim is extremely helpful with his advice beside all of his contribution to DSMTuners.com. @twicks69 Just some food for thought since your already planning to ship if you decide on rebuilding.

My 90 GST I use to drive the shift were not the smoothest and it had more play in the stick. My 97 GSX is butter really tight feeling and shifts great at all RPM, that being said English Racing did perform adjustments on it.

Yep, converting mine to double cone is a consideration. Unfortunately it is going to cost a minimum of $2k all said and done. It looks like I should be able to get a good 2g transmission for more like $750.

I'm not too concerned about the weaker 3-4 collar in the 2g trans, I'm not going to drag race this car and its not going to make much over 300hp.

TMZ is on the list, I just couldn't remember the name. Looks like all of them can convert my synchros to double cone.

Get some tools and fix it yourself. 91 can be converted to double synchros. Actually any year can with the right combination of parts.

Double cone also started in 93 not 94

Also tempting. I am considering buying the '92 transmission and attempting a rebuild myself. My dad has a press and a car lift. I've done gear and bearing replacements in transmissions before, but none this complex. I also would like someone knowledgeable to inspect the wear patterns and replace anything that I may not know to look for. Can the double synchro conversion be done without machining? Or do the newer gears/sliders not fit on the older shafts?

I can pretty well guarantee you that any used trans you buy will be trash. I've had a lot of trans's come through my door, and I've yet to see one that was actually a good use-able trans. I can also tell you from experience that the standard single synchro second is more durable than the double synchro second. If you have a clutch that works properly, the single synchro trans will shift just fine.

2nd gears strength is rarely an issue though

I don't believe he was referring to the second gears strength itself, but the synchro's strength.

I will say, you must be seeing some beat transmissions @bastarddsm ! I've recent picked up two perfectly good ones locally for a song, pulled em apart this past week and they look great, aside from some slightly worn synchros.
Anyway, diying it isn't too bad an idea as long as you have the skills/tools and can read a technical manual.
