Car is a 90 AWD Talon.

I've been experiencing problems with my newly aquired car and since i dont know too much about the symptoms of these cars i figure it would be better to ask.

So here's the deal..When the car is cold or just about warmed up the transmission seems to shift fine into all gears without a scratch. As soon as the cars warmed up and has been diven awhile its hard to get it into first unless i throw the shifter back and forth a few times then ease it in (sometimes it goes..sometimes it doesnt) and it'll scratch hard if it goes in fighting. shifting into second seems rough, third goes in if i throw it in smooth but firm, fourth sometimes has the same issue aswell as fifth. Reverse has almost the same problem as first..but sometimes it goes in ok and sometimes as soon as i start to release the clutch i feel no engagment then all of a sudden a slight jerk and it starts to engage..the pedal feels the same. and sometimes when im shifting i feel a vibration..sort of a jerking in the pedal when its depressed.

I asked a couple of guys..2 said the tranny's shot, 1 said crank walk..and i think im shit outta luck. Im trying to get a basic idea of whats going on with the car..im gonna change out the all bushing's and try some royal purple synchromax(just cause i can get it where i work) fluid to see if that get's me anywhere.. What else can i check? Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated!

U might had the same problem I had but I was grinding when i went back down to second but when i bought the car the lady told me that it was a new transmission. The funny thing my girlfriend all the way from Europe figured it out for me. Try when down shifting going back down from 3rd to 1st holding the clutch down then second. If it still fights check your linkage because some people have had that problem to. A shot tranny is normally from my experience is that the engine will rev higher than expected and not pull the car.

Yeah im actually going to try adjusting the shifter tommorow moringing... I know the clutch was replaced before i bought the car so maybe the shifters off? well i guess i'll tackle all things one at a time. Thanks for the advice.

That is the clutch, not the transmission. The engine with continue to produce power, but the pressure plate or the disk can't handle it, so the disk spins and spins while the flywheel spins freely as well.

First thing here is check the Clutch Master Cylinder Fluid level, if it's low the Slave is probably leaking, Slaves die about every 50,000 miles & like to die/leak when it first gets cold - If the Clutch Master looks original change that out too along with the Slave - It's AMAZING how many guys are still out there with ORIGINAL Clutch Master Cyilnder & wonder why their Tranny shifts like CRAP, Clutch Master Cyilnders die about every 100,000 miles - Certainly adjust your Linkage at both ends per the VFAQ & check the Bushings AND Cable Bracket at the Tranny to make sure fasteners are all snug & Cables are not in any bind or anything between Firewall & Tranny - Certainly check your Tranny Fluid level but I would hold off on Gear Oil change until you complete ALL the above - ANY of these things will cause ALL the symptoms you mention & bear looking at WAY before you come to any conclusion that the Tranny itself is bad - Mind if you don't address this REAL soon you WILL tear that Tranny up internally.

Yeah i just got up and im about to check everything out right now. im actually not gonna drive the car again till i figure everything out. i'll keep you guys updated. Has anyone made their own steel braided clutch line? i think im better off buying one..Im also gonna go to work and see if we have a master and slave in stock..but i doubt it.

thanks for everyones tip's! i really really appreciate the help. :thumb:

So i got under the hood today..checked the resevoir for fluid..it was full. got under the car and checked the slave cyl. pulled the boot back and fluid dripped out..so thats leaking. then i look up a little more and saw that my transmission case it cracked open..im guessing theres no fluid in there..and at this point i guess im just gonna gather up a new slave cyl., clutch master, resevoir, and line and a new case..maybe even a transmission..probably get a new clutch and flywheel while im at it.

Im looking at a few transmissions right now..are all transmission housings the same? ex. my cars a 90..and the trans im looking ats a 92..could i just use the 92 trans housing with my 90 internals? or am i SOL and just have to find a 90?

SO>>>>>>>> Your Tranny is DRY? - It's really 'cracked' all the way thru? - You pulled the Plug to Check Fluid level?? - There is DEFINITELY some bastard shit on the 90's - Different SPLINES, etc - You could EASILY end up buying a 91 & using the 90 as a PARTS car & COME OUT AHEAD if the 90 Tranny is REALLY cracked.

not solutions but questions. do you double clutch? do you downshift? do you match your engine speeds when downshifting?
1g trannys suck for 1-2 I always double clutch these gears (especially when driving around town)
when down shifting something ive learned from hear push in clutch tap the shifter into neutral tap throttle put in lower gear ALWAYS works it "resets your synchros" (thats what the article said)
if your hard going into all gears check your linkage. with going into reverse throw it towards 5th (with clutch in OBVIOUSLY) then back to Reverse it will go in my cars the same way

also yes make sure of what ^ they all said haha hope you dont need a whole new tranny

Yeah i havent checked the fluid yet..my balls dropped so far from seeing the case cracked i just stop messing with the car for the day. I didnt pull the plug yet but im just saying worse case..its probably dry..it did crack pretty far down..and im pretty sure it is.

Im pretty easy on the car most of the time..i mean i do get on it (who doesnt?) . i do blip the car, i shift easy double clutching once in awhile..

Im gonna try putting some fluid in there and see if it acts any different.

So i cant use the 91+ transmission case with the 90 guts? if its not too bad and could use a rebuild anyways..i'de like to just get a case at send it out for a rebuild.

Other than that..i have a local selling a 91 trans..would i have to convert to 91 hub/axle? and possibly shift linkage? I dont know about using this one as a parts car..i kinda wanna get this one up and going.

if you buy a transmission for a 90-94 your ###### going to need a diffrent input shaft and transfer because the splines are diffrent. you will also need i need shift base and linkage its diffrent from 90 to 91. 91-94 are the same

So i got the car up on a small garage lift. its actually the bell housing and the transmission has fluid in it. im gonna change the slave and master asap and see if that solves that..if so then i'll find me a new bell housing.

Double clutching doesn't reset the synchros. It should just stop the gears from turning so the synchros aren't put under as much stress. Double clutching will prolong the life of your synchros. I actually drove my car with shot synchros for almost a year until I had my tranny reconditioned.
