Hi, I have a '92 Talon non turbo and am having problems with my manual transmission. Please excuse me if this has been asked before. When I bought the car, the tranny would grind when put into second gear and sometimes wouldn't go into gear at all. I went to the junkyard, got another transmission, and had a friend install it along with a new Centerforce clutch. It's been great since then, until now. I've put around 2k miles on the transmission by now, and it seems to be having problems too. Big surprise. When the car is cold it seems to not want to upshift properly in lower gears. It grinds a little and doesn't feel right. Downshifting is smooth, and when the car is driven for a while it seems to get better. If I change my tranny oil, will it go away, or is it something more than that? I still have my old transmission, should I get it out and get it rebuilt?

I have recommended GM Synchromesh in the past. It is a common ailment on 1g's Others swear by their favorite brand of oil which they say is cheaper. With what we have invested in these vehicles a few dollars on oil shouldn't break the bank. Try this before you spend a bunch on rebuild.

I will do that. Thanks for the replies. As for the old transmission, if I still have problems later on, what would be the going cost to have someone rebuild it? Would it be something I could do myself over the winter if I got a rebuild kit and took my time? How much would a rebuild kit cost me and would it be worth it? I live about an hour and a half from Shepherd Racing, and they will do a transmission rebuild for $895, but that also includes a Shepherd Racing spec second gear, is that a good price or should I just find someone closer?
