1g starter problem

Did you reinstall the starter plate? Did you check the flywheel to ensure there aren't any teeth missing. Did you get the proper starter for the right vehicle?
 
the 2.0l nt fwd auto are the only ones with differant starters besides the 1.8. but even with the starter from a 2l nt fwd auto will let the car crank over not good but it work i made a mistake on mine and put the wrong starter on it. check to see if any teeth are broke. when the starter is off spin the gear while pulling it out to make shure it goes out fully to make contact with the flywheel. i had that happen to me that i bought a new starter and the gear didnt come out fully. i just exchanged it at autozone.
