Hey guys, I've been around the forums a while now and I need some opinions. If you had to choose between a 1g and a 2g gsx which would you choose? To me stage1 according to this site should be around the same because you would need to spend more money on a 1g to bring it up to good running condition thus cancelling the fact that stage 1 is cheaper. 2g just look way better to me 97+ :thumb: but I would hate to go to sleep with the "big C" looming in the shadows :thumbdown . Which car handles better in autocross and on the track? I suppose they are both equally easy to bring to 13s and below. I would just like some of your guys' opinion on the subject because I'm torn between the two and I'm hoping to move up to awd before summer. :D

2g! is my opinion if it matter's I'v had 2 1g's awd and 1 awd 2g witch i loved way more!

well MY 1st gens were choppy dident ride as nice, tranny in my 2g out lasted the 1st gens and the curvey body of the 2g got the ladys  haha just what i have experienced

2g all they way i love the way they look everyone does even the 1g guys get a bit jelous :shhh: but i think 1g can go alot farther just cause of the 6bolt bov better head but hey u cant really make a 1g look nice but u can swap a 1g egine in a 2g :thumb: 2g thow all the way!

If you just want to get into the 13s, then the 1G is going to get you there cheaper and easier. The 14B is plenty capable of producing enough power to get you well into the 13s.

If you want to get into the 12s, then either setup will serve you well. Without serious weight reduction, you are going to have to go through a lot to get your car into the 12s on a 14B. Both setups will likely require a turbo upgrade.

If you are talking 11s, then the 6 bolt 1G is the way to go. The 6 bolt motor is capable of handling a bit more power without upgrading engine internals. This will definitely be the cheaper route.

If you're talking less than that, I really have no idea. I would assume either car is going to require internal engine upgrades to achieve these numbers.

In terms of handling, the 2G should theoretically handle better because of it's wider wheel base. I asked a similar question, and most people seem to agree the 2G exhibits superior handling characteristics.

I went with a 2G because I am more of a twisties guy than a drag guy. Granted, I am probably pushing around 300-320bhp and running high 12s - low 13s in the quarter, but I am still all about the handling. I would have gone with a 16G if I wasn't.

That brings me to my final point. The 1G has the 16G as it's easy bolt-on turbo upgrade. Although this turbo spools reasonably fast and low, it is a little more suited for drag racing. The 2G's quicker and easier turbo upgrade is the T28, which is better suited for running around curvey roads because of it's low and quick spooling capabilities.

I've heard that putting an older motor in a newer car is illegal due to emissions, any word on the validity of that information?

Hey, if I had 2G money, I'd go for the 2G GSX (Late 97-99). Since I don't, I'm in the market for a 1G...On looks alone and aftermarket exterior mods, the 2Gs win hands down. The 1Ga does have a strange appeal to it though...I've seen a few of these modded for show and go and they look great. I think that's the best route to go -- take the road less traveled and you'll stand out a lot more.

Yes it is illegal to put an older motor into a newcar. With both of them being 4G63 most smog guys won't know anyways.

Much thanks to all your guy's info. We'll see where I end up in about 2 months time  I'm leaning towards 2g :shhh: if I can find one in good condition (97-99) that's reasonably priced. (less than 10k). I'll probobly keep my 1g N/T for a daily driver or just to drive when the gsx has that first few weeks of maintainance downtime.

I like the 2g extrerior, my opinion 1g's can look damn good too, true they dont have all the ricey shit but i dont like tons of shit on cars anyways, it's just a matter of opinion do you want to spend your money on exterior or making your car faster? i love my 1g i am having a custom bodykit made for my car through a friend only thing i am changing from stock front bumper is to expose my intercooler fully, w/o hacking my front bumper up. but, 1g's with 2-2.5" drop some nice rims tinted, nice paint, 93 talon rear end conversion. i think look damn good but personal opinion

I'm not into the ricey look myself.. a 2g with a FMIC lowered looks damn nice to me (97+) add a lip and i'm drooling.. XDD

gimme a 1g anyday. i prefer the boxier look, and im not sure how wide a 2g is compared to the 1g, but when i look at the front end of my 1g it looks a lot wider than a 2g, i like that. and our 1g's stil smile out of the factory... :D and also, i just love that flat spoiler that follows the rear of the car, its is THE best looking spoiler on any car i have EVER seen. ah, my sig pic says it all :thumb:

I love my 1ga, imo the 1gb looks like a rough 2g. I also do not like the 2ga compared to the 97-99 2gb. The 2gb is by far the best looking eclipse especially if you find a lip. Here is the thing, a 2gb will cost you over $8000 usually, probably more. A nice 1g can be had for around $3000 which leaves you with 5 grand or more to modify/fix your car.

Look at it this way, when you get a 1g things will break but you can upgrade whatever breaks. The first thing to break on my 1g was the clutch so the first upgrade for me was an act 2600 and lightweight flywheel.

i like my 1G Awd is great I like the fact that I was able to drive it hard and i really had no problems with it same with a friend of mines it got beat on and only thing that went bad was a alternator.

2g now dont ge me wrong they are nice cars they can be as fast as a 1g you can put body kits on them.

If your planing on ever modding and want some CRANKWALK go with the 2Gs. Personaly I like the looks of my 90 1g better and they have better motors. Most of my friends have 2gs and i'm getting tired of them, i like the 90-91 1gs styling more. My friend Nates 91 1g AWD has just 3in exhaust, K&N, fuel controller, upper intercooler pipe, and 22PSI and he put down a 12.4

What is more important to you? Looks or performance?

If it is looks I would choose 2GB for sure. I actually don't mind the looks of my 1GB but my 2GB gets lots of attention especially in Canada were they weren't sold new.

Performance wise I prefer the 1G because the car is slightly smaller/lighter it feels more tossable and lowering springs & shocks make it handle even better without compromising ride too much. If you use anything more than a 1.25" drop on a 2G the ride goes to shit and the only shocks that work well on a 2G are the expensive koni yellows. Engine wise a 4G63 is a 4G63 (crankwalk is overrated) and unless you have goals of 400 hp & up I don't think it really matters. 6-bolts are stronger but 2G's have the far superior MAS of the 3000GT.

You can't lose either way as I love both of my DSM's. :thumb:

I'm selling my '2gb' (converted) off and buying a 1g :shhh:

It's all about preference.. I love the 2gb style, but I need a new project to work on, and I've definitely got an eye for clean rims and 2" lowering on a 1g ;)
