1g laser fwd. cranks only

Okay. I have a 90 laser fwd. I have read the diagnose a no start several times. I have fixed many of the things on there but have run out of money and need your help narrowing it down. So here's the deal. Turn the key in the on position. Boost gauge goes to 0. Replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs. Checked the fuel pressure regulator. It was wet with gas. Did a compression test 150 to 160 on all cylinders. When I sprayed starter fluid in it the car started. Did a spark test. I have spark on all cylinders. Check my wiring. There was a few wires that needed help but nothing to serious. Check fuses and relays. They none are blown. Put octane booster and fresh gas in the gas tank. I can hear the fuel pump kick on. My gas gauge doesn't work. Don't know if that will tell you anything or not. I just know any little clue can lead to a fix with these cars. With that said is there anything I should check next. I'm going to get a new cas. On the 1st of next month unless I find the problem before then. It there a way of testing that before I buy one?

Well if it starts with starter fluid & you can hear the pump run sounds like it is lacking injector pulse.
But you still need to make sure your fuel pressure is correct.

Check that the injectors are powering up key on cranking.
If there is power, need to check over the ECU's control of the injectors & all the respective wiring.

Make sure you have good fuel pressure. If you spark and you are getting air then you need fuel. It could also be a cas sensor or something not timed right.

Sounds like ECU has, or is getting ready to dump on you. My Laser had almost the same symptoms until I replaced the ECU

..now the vehicle screams down the freeway in prime condition-starts right up, holds a nice 750rpm idle .. and that was 3 yrs ago when I did the ECU replacement.

For a 22 yr old car, you have to expect an ECU dying out for sure, if it's the original one.

And that's a MD128625 ECU that you need.

Its better you scan it first, but not the faults, check the measure of each sensors in the scanner machine, put specially care on the barometric pressure sensor, it could be bad, I had that problem with my 91' Laser about 4 years ago. Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone. How much is an ecu running. I refuse to do the junk yard bit with this car. I've made that mistake. Is it cheaper to pull it out and have it sent off? I'll get my hands on a scanner from work and check into it.

Motoguys can do a repair/exchange for 200 bucks. You pop it out, send it off and they'll send you another one to try out and if good they charge your card the 200. It's actually a 300 charge, since it's a 100 for the core charge.

EDIT: Looks like Motoguys are out of business - have to do a search on ECU repair and/or repair/exchange.

hey, before you throw an ecu at it like i did on my dsm, try giving the fuel pump a straight 12v from an external source and then try to start it up. i had a issue similar and it ended up being a faulty pin in the ecu. it was the pin that gave the mpfi relay its ground to keep the pump running while the car was in the start position. i've heard that this is a common problem with mitsu ecu of that era. ended up just splicing in a switch to activate the mpfi relay manually, works like a charm. best of luck to you sir, hope this helps.
