I just brought my 1g fwd back to life (and on her wheels) and gave her a new set of dual piston brakes from a 3kgt. I wasn't going to update the proportioning (or proportional) valve but it seems to be leaking and since the correct part for the car is no longer available I was wondering if it would be advisable to use a valve from an AWD w/o ABS instead.

Any suggestion would greatly appreciated.

Well, if you do not have ABS, then yes, you would be fine using the 1G AWD (w/o ABS) proportioning valve. I believe you can purchase a 1g AWD (w/o ABS) prop valve at JNZ or Extremepsi. Here are some interesting reads on split points for the different prop valve so you can decide what you want to use:

If you have upgraded the brakes in the front, you may want to check out part# MB895431. JNZ recommends it for 1g AWD with big brake upgrades.

If you decide you want something specific from the links, then post a WTB ad.

Thanks for the links, I was familiar with the VFAQ one but had never got to the CA DSM Club one (I am actually a member of that board too). What I am having problem with is the fact that in addition to having bigger brakes the comparison with the AWD model bias is tainted in my opinion by the different front / rear weight ratio between FWD and AWD. Stock FWD split point is 4200 for 90-91 (not sure if it actually goes to 2500 in 92 as the VFAQ says, the front/rear brakes were the same through all 1G years for the FWD models), while AWD goes from 3700 to 3500 with the 2 pistons upgrade.

On the other hand, my 91 GST under hard braking condition has always tended to slide it's back to the side even after replacing pads and using new brake lines, so maybe after upgrading the front brakes to the bigger ones this problem would actually be lessened, so maybe I should stick to the stock bias after all...not sure though.

Keep in mind that the AWD (in addition to dual piston brakes)also has the added weight and drive train configuration.

If you keep the prop valve you have, you could always just play with pad combinations to your preference as well. If you want to go all out, there is always the Wilwood adjustable prop valve.

I am thinking along the lines of getting a 1G AWD small brakes prop valve (3700 vs 3500 of later models).

Brake pads are the updated version of the OEM, Akebono ProACT.
