Oakville,
I don't know if this is the keyfob that came from the factory (black with 4 yellowish/green buttons in a circular pattern) or not but the thing is ugly as hell and well HUGE. Its almost the same size as my cell phone. I would do away with it completely except the ignition key and the door key seem to not be the same (correct me if I am wrong but I can't seem to use my ignition key to open the door). Thus the previous owner must have lost the door key. So I need the thing to open/lock my car. I really want to get rid of this beast that lurks in my pocket. So 2 questions:

1. I doubt it but is there anyway to get a new door key either cut or from Mitsu?
2. Is there anywhere that I could get a smaller keyfob?

I will try to have pics up soon maybe you guys can tell me if this is factory or not.

I have the original key code on my Valet key, take that to the dealer and you will have a factory spec key. I could never open my trunk with a key from a hardware store. The Mitsu 2g key I ended up getting is like butter. :sneaky:

You should be able to give the dealer your vin and they can order a key for you. Also the keyfob you speak of may be an aftermarket thing. If so you might be able to replace it or update the system.

Your big fob is aftermarket. 1Gs did not come with remote locks. You might check it for an FCC number, then put that in eBay's search and tell it to search inside ads, and see if there's something less-hideous available.
As for your lock, I'd suspect either the ign or door lock had been broken, and junkyard replaced. You could swap out the passenger and driver's locks to be able to get into the car.
Despite being American cars, DSMs are not GMs, and do not have separate keys for the ignition and the door locks (which has alway seemed pretty stupid to me, but so are keys that can be upside-down).

Thanks Def, the key works on the passenger side so your guess about the junkyard fix must be right. So a swap is in order.

As for the keyfob would I be able to just get a smaller one or would I have to buy a whole new system? Or actually I might just tear the old system and scrap the remote lock idea. I'm not that lazy that I can unlock/lock my own doors.

It's iffy. It'd help if you can find what brand your remote setup is, because it would probably need to be programmed to recognize another remote much in the same way a 2G system needs to be.
