First off, make sure it's installed properly and not 180* out. See the two pictures about 3/4 of the way down this page.

Next, you'll need to install it properly, start the car, and get it up to operating temperature. You'll need a timing light to check the base timing using the white mark on the harmonic damper and the timing marks on the lower timing belt cover. You will need to ground the timing signal. I'm not sure if the '97 has the connector on the wall, but I don't think it does. You'll then need to find a OBDII tool to do this for you (or if you have/get ECMlink, it can as well). Then hook up the gun and aim/fire it towards the lower timing belt cover area to view the white mark. Rotate the CAS until it reads 5* BTDC and then bolt it down.
