So my Alternator belt was slipping very hard, So i took off the the belt. I had my buddy look at it, and he said i was missing a "Pivot bolt" from the very bottom of the alternator, and once i put it back in, It should tighten everything back up, and no more slippage?

What should I look for, or ask for at say, auto zone, or possibly a hardware shop?

Is this a pretty easy task to get back in? Im not a wiz when it comes to this. Would it be easier paying someone 15-20 bucks?

92 Eagle talon, tsi, a/t

Thanks!

I just bought one at Westlake Ace Hardware as a matter of fact. I believe it is a 8mm x 1.25, but I forget the length. (something around 140mm I think). Get the hardened one, and pick up a good lock nut and washer for it. You may also want to get a fender washer and grind one side semi-flat, to sit against the front boss on the alternator like the stock one does. Should be less than $5 for everything and takes maybe 10 minutes, depending on how the car is set up.

Also check your alternator for excessive wear in the bolt holes, and make sure the steel bushing is in good shape. If there is too much slop in the pivot bolt, the alternator can twist when you tighten the belt, which will cause the belt to squeal and may even cause the...
You may or may not be able to find it at a parts store. But yes if you can find the right bolt it's something just about anyone can do in 20 minutes. Believe it's a 10mmx1.5 bolt not sure on length though. But please don't take my info on bolt size double check.

If there is too much slop in the pivot bolt, the alternator can twist when you tighten the belt, which will cause the belt to squeal and may even cause the adjuster bracket that hangs off the block to bend outward and rub against the PS pulley.

I'll see if I can find one laying around when I get home and edit this post with the actual length. Edit: original length for 1990-1993 was 116mm and 1994 was 118mm, so 120mm will do.
