Anyways, I have a 1990 BMW 750iL V12 with a few mods, but I am going off to college soon, and need something more reliable in the winter and better gas, as 11MPG won't be on my budget for a college kid. SO, I got this offer last night from a fellow that is willing to trade me my BMW for his 1G and he will add some cash ( mine is worth a little more)

I know we aren't supposed to post classifieds here, but, I am a newbie, and asking for help in some questions I can ask. I work on my own cars, never worked on a turbo before, but learning is always fun ( BMW was my first car, and boy did I learn..) Are parts easy to find and relatively cheap (compared to GIANT costs for BMW parts.)? If I can't do something myself, is it expensive ( more expensive than a bimmer would be) to get work done?

Here is the ad, let me know anything I should know about these cars, its faults, things to look for, anything would be AWESOME! I would love to convert over to the DSM side, but need some help, so guide me. :sneaky:

i got a 1992 laser awd
car was made in december of 1991 so it has the 6/4 bolt combo
has around 150k on body, was told motor has 40k?
big 16g turbo, external dump for the waste gate
full 2.5 inch exhaust from turbo back
and an act 2100 clutch
everything on car is basically stock except for the turbo and clutch
body is in decent condition, the drivers fender needs replaced, and the car has small dings here and there, hardly no rust tho
car runs good, and shifts great, idles good as well
has decent tires, interior isnt bad, only the headliner is sagging and it needs a radio, other than that its not a bad car,
it would make a good project for a build or just a good daily driver

id like to see around 3000, but its negotiable

willing to trade for a decent integra, swapped civic (preferably hatch) or anything decent,

the only real damage to the car ^^^

I appreciate the help guys, thanks! Essentially I'm looking for a reliable car, and possibly a small track car everyonce in a while, but just need it to be reliable, and yes I have some money. :O

The guy daily drives it, a pretty good sign it's been reliable for him at the very least. I would trade for it. How reliable it is depends mostly on how willing you are at maintaining it, doing the proper check ups and such. The questions you've been asking will be answered as soon as you dip your feet in and get a little wet, :thumb:

Heads up, the 16g on the car looks like it might be an Ebay version... just so you are aware.

He said it is 16g ebay conversion. Its seems to be decent. is his 3k price to high for this car? i know nothing about dsms fill me in about the motor and his asking price?

3k is high for a 1g not in immaculate condition. But he seems more than willing to go lower on the price, don't be afraid to knock several hundred off his asking price (but I thought you were trading?). The 6 bolt motor is what you want, and 40K miles is on the lower end. Ask him if you can get a compression test done and see what kind of numbers it's putting up.

Yeah 3000 is a bit much for that 1g. A 1g at that price should me in great condition and runs great or have some heavy mods in it. Definately lower the price a couple hundred dollars as he seems willing. Also, as talonDSMerr said, do a compression test and take it for a rip if you can and check for general things like burning oil, wierd feeling clutch and all that. And i wouldn't trust a ebay 16G. My friend had one and it went in no time so be prepared for anything with that turbo. Just my personal opinion.

True, $3k for a early '92 is too much. That fender will have to be replaced with the cancer showing.

$2200 tops for sure.

+1 to the $2200. If you wait, you can find a much much better deal.

I bought my 92' Plymouth Laser RS Turbo AWD, 6bolt/4bolt that's in immaculate condition and unmolested stock and runs fine minus some burning oil for $1300 with bunch of parts and extras with it mind the less. Deals on DSM are all over you just gotta have patients and know wether it's a good deal or not.

I also paid $1300 for my '90, but thankfully it had a recent and very strong JDM Galant VR4 with a big 16G put in not too long ago. But, as soon as I brought it home, an immediate total belt replacement and tranny oil fluid change was in store-I didn't drive it for a good two weeks after I got it until I felt ready to really give it the road tests.

Has a good combo, 6/4 but honestly that thing looks sorta shit-boxy, it's nowhere near worth 3k, more like half that. The wrinkled fender and rust are a bad sign, expect rust elsewhere...

Also the 'work' hes done seems sub-par, vacuum lines way too long and wrapped around everywhere... BOV in odd position, battery just chilling half way off the tray with no hold-down... no heat shield? No timing belt cover?

Hope they don't care about smog in Michigan with that open wastegate O2 housing...

Also... stock intake piping and intercooler with bigger turbo... bleh

bigger turbo and no fuel mods, hope you like fuel cut...

I'd pass....

Don't buy this man. You will regret it a lot in the long run. Ebay turbo will not last you long at all, plus it looks like it is leaking oil everywhere. It has waaay to much rust for the price he wants. No upper timing belt cover is also a bad sign. 1200$ is the absolute highest I would give for a car like that.

Good luck.

+1. I agree with you completely. If you wait for and be patient, you will find a way better deal.
For that price the car should have some good mods in it. And it does look like the turbo is leaking some oil. Im not trying to bash the trade, just saying my opinion. On Craigslist, they are selling a Laser with a Big 16G, built up internals, and nice body for around 2,000. Just wait, or sell the car, and buy a AWD Turbo DSM.
