420A 1998 Eclipse GS shifting issues

I'm a new member, but I'm actually posting this for a friend. He has a 98 Eclipse GS, and about a year ago he ran off the road and bottomed out in a ditch, it didn't appear that he hurt anything until he shifted from first to second and it started grinding like crazy. All of the other shifts are as smooth as they have always been, but it grinds like crazy when shifting into second in any way. He can manage to keep if from grinding at all when shifting from first if he pulls down and to the left really slow, but going from third to second is pretty much impossible. I was just curious if anyone else has had an issue like this in the past. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sounds like it needs a new transmission. By new I mean different. Most likely it stop pretty fast and messed it up. But could be the linkage. Just to check the little things. If it grinds that hard though than the syncros are most likely shot for 2nd. I don't know what your technical skills are but jackstransmissions.com has some good parts.
