1997 gsx power loss after shifting

Hey guys I was wondering if any of you might know what's wrong with my car. I recently purchased a 1997 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx from an old buddy of mines mother. The car has been sitting since 2004 after my buddy passed away. I replaced clutch and flywheel but since I have completed it I have problably put 5 miles on it. If shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd the car just falls on its face. It will stay running but isn't recognizing my foot on the gas pedal or something. This is my first Dsm and I don't know what could be wrong. Thanks for looking.
 
I checked the check engine light and it said p0100. So I figured maf so I changed it and it didn't clear it up. I was told possibly the tps. It has fresh gas and I just got a set of stock injectors so ill prob throw in tomorrow. If the car is just sitting there it runs fine, on the throttle it seems to break up a little at higher rpms. Delta it has a greddy pure atmospheric on it. Venom injectors fuel pump injen intake.
 
start off with the cheap easy parts first spark plugs,wires, oil change, fresh gas and use some injector cleaner. I use seafoam put a 1/3 of the bottle in the oil/gas/breakbooster line.
 
Why people always said to change parts and see what happens? How about test the sensors like the tps and see if you get proper voltage while accelerating and check for boost leak before buying parts that probably won't fix anything. Just my opinion.
 
Its been sitting since 2004, thats 7 years coming to 8. Electronics and fluids get old and if not used will breakdown and erode. Either bring it to a well educated mechanic, or do the basic maintence; Replace ALL fluids, spark plugs, get the alternater and battery health checked out at like autozone or pepboys, do a boost leak test, compression test, see if the throttle cable is loose, all pedals for severe play, etc etc.

RECIRCULATE your blow off valve so when you shift it doesn't fall on its face. If that isn't it, the TPS can be very finicky.
Also, if your injen intake does not have a recirculation fitting, you'll need to get that added/sell it for a recirc injen or stock accordian intake/ or go with a MAFT.

I'll try and get a video for you guys can see what its doing. Like i said this is my first Dsm and the whole Awd thing is new to me. I've also got a 1993 240sx that me and a couple buddies did a rb25 skyline swap in. Idk it it makes a difference but it also has a safc2 I was thinking it might possibly have a setting messed up.
 
Okay I looked it up on ALLDATA and it is going to be throttle cable or your TPS. Guys I will explain this since I have have learned it from being in school which I'm going to be a technician. A mechanic changes parts till it fixes it a Technician diagnoses the problem and fixes it the first time save the money and either take it to a tech or buy your car on ALLDATA and diagnose it. It will tell you every step with yes or no question as what you need to check and when you get to the route to which your car is having problems will tell you exactly what to change or check for the fix. That's my .02.

P0100 is a MAS code, which you obviously know.
Install those known good stock injectors just in case the ones in the car are larger aftermarket ones. Then figure out a way to recirculate the BOV or replace it with one that can be.

You're going very rich in between shifts when the BOV opens and lets out air that has been metered by the MAS. When that vented air doesn't reach the cylinders, the fuel that was injected to match it is causing you to go very rich and the engine stumbles. The O2 sensor feedback showing a rich condition is eventually triggering the MAS DTC.

After you recirculate the BOV, don't forget to reset the ECU by pulling the positive battery cable for a few minutes. You should see an immediate improvement. If the code returns after you do this, which I seriously doubt, then update this thread again.

Maft mass air flow ...
The GM MAF translator can be setup with the sensor in blow through after the BOV. It doesn't measure as accurately as it would in draw through pre-turbo, but it does allow for the BOV to be vented to atmosphere.

You don't think we are able to diagnose this properly without ALLDATA?
-Personally, I'd recommend buying a FSM instead.
 
Also to state if it no the bov being vented giving you issues, just remember when you shift and your change gears especially if you have a bigger turbo you will drop off boost and have to build it back up so there is always power loss when driving a 5 speed due to changing gears the power band falls off.

Just check all your maintanance "vfaq" is a great website to learn the basics on how these cars run and what happens when you start moding them.If dsm is not your thing maybe start with something more basic like a sohc honda civic it's impossible not to make em run, even at 300,000 miles and some bent valves.:thumb:
 
Do you have a wideband?If you have a aftermarket fuel pump I would get a afpr, hopefully that will fix it for you, if not it still good to have.

Did you recirculate that new bov? I haven't read anywhere that you did. Regardless of how many new BOVs you put on it or what brand it will still run like shit until you recirculate it.

And if that fuel pump was the issue it would more than likely cause the problem all the time. Not just after shifting.
 
BOV is all recirculated. Eliminated fuel pump as an issue. Back to MAF. If you get into the throttle easy it dosent hesitate but if you shift then floor it it cuts out.
 
Feel down on the back of the block and find the knock sensor. Once you find it, check to see if it has shit coming out of it. It will feel like tar. That would be the next thing that I check out. A bad knock sensor can cause an issue like what you are describing.

Does the engine bay seem to get really hot as well when you drive it?
