I’m very interested in getting a 2g Eclipse. I found an Eclipse that stalls whenever put in gear but idles fine. It has 103,000 miles. What do you think could be the issue and how tough of a fix could it be

Honest answer:

Based on your lack of detailed information about the car, and the previous maintenance on the car, it could be anything.

We cant give you an answer. Cars can shut off for multiple reasons. There could be a family of cats under the hood for all we know

Did you pop the hood on the car, have you ever worked on cars before?

I haven’t gone to see it yet it’s kinda far away but I have seen that there is an engine. Don’t see any cats. Just maybe was looking to get some ideas to see what the cost could be cause my budget isn’t super large. If you don’t have anything that’s fine. I have a few ideas my self just was hoping to get a few other opinions.

Manual trans or automatic?

If you do buy it (or another DSM), will you fix it yourself or take it to a shop? Serious question, because most shops are not friendly to DSMs, even if you have deep pockets.

Cats ROFL maybe it's mice and some cats would help.

With such a generic statement of the problem and no other information I am unable to help you.

There are atleast a dozen things that could cause the car to shut off. It could be a simple problem like an unhooked vacuum line that cost zero dollars to fix, or it could be an advanced problem that the car has jumped timing

If you are not familiar with these cars, they are very complex and not a good car for a beginner to try to figure out issues

You can view the factory service manual for free at Www.charm.li

These cars are going on 25 years old, so there are tons of reasons why one would shut off

This is really something for you to think about.

If you want a car that you can turn the key and it works every time and you want to do more driving and having fun than doing maintenance, then this isnt that kind of car.

These cars are 25 years old. It takes a lot to keep it running. Not just money, but time too. I lost my last engine because I was trying to drive on it when i knew i had issues (Oil leaked onto timing belt..I couldnt have bent more valves.) Itll let you get away with it for a while, but in the end it will make you pay....severely. My last mechanic told me that I needed to find someone else that really knows these cars, which is why I really only send it to one local shop run by a former DSMer that works on Evos for the stuff that i cant do. But is also the reason why ive been doing a lot more of the work myself.

If I ever got rid of this car, I really think it would have to go to someone from the forum or one of my friends that has or has had a DSM because the average person just isnt going to understand a 6-bolt swap and the mismatched parts from multiple DSM models and other cars, no emissions equipment, the weird things that go on when there is a boost leak, the shitty restarts due to bypassing fuel pressure solenoid. and understanding ECMLink... ITs been a learning experience, but I spend a LOT of time researching. So yes, the issue that you know that it has could be a ton of things, especially if youre not aware of what the owner has done to it.

Makes me jealous of my wifes Prelude where it always runs every time you turn the key. Of course that goes away when we hop on the highway and I leave her 5 cars behind :D and I remember why I love this car. But I keep going with it because Ive had this car for close to 20 years now so im use to and willing to deal with the issues. But its something to think about. . I went for YEARS with it being reliable, more so then most DSM guys, but not until spending money and putting in time to make it this way.

So the real question isnt, what could be wrong with this car. The real question is do you love these cars enough to deal with all the issue that will come your way.

PS ....I had a possum living in mine when it was up on blocks for 2 years. :p
