I decided to start my 90 AWD the other day just to let it run a little since i've been mainly driving my FWD for the past couple weeks. I start it up and put it in reverse and start to back up when it stalls out. Ok, im not use to the stock clutch, maybe i just let it out to soon. I start it back up and it does it agian. So i take it out of reverse and put in back in and I here a clicking noise that sounds like its coming from the ECU. So I play with a bit and seemed to click everytime i put it in reverse. Now it just cranks and will not start. Doing some research i found that could be leaking caps and the ECU power relay would most likely be my clicking. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Should I just try a differnt ECU if i can find one, or should I try to fix mine?(assuming the ECU is the problem)

So it wont start anymore. Or just in gear. Is it an auto?

The only thing I think that the ecu migth see electrically is when the reverse lights come on. Did it do it in first gear too?

Would it rev fine. Maybe when the ecu sees a load it has its problem.

Take the ecu out and take the top and bottom covers off and look for leaky caps.

Check the ISC as well.

Its a 5 speed, and I don't remember if it did it in the other gears aswell but im thinking it did.

So what would be clicking around the ECU area when i put the car in gear?

I think I know what you are talking about, my car does it as well, but everything has always functioned fine in my car and I have never had any issues so I just dont worry about it. The noise mine makes only lasts like 3-4 seconds and you can only hear it if its dead silent in the car and even then the noise is very low. If you think its the same thing mine does I wouldn't worry about it.

As stated, pull the ecu out and inspect it. If you can borrow an ecu from someone, check and make sure that is the problem.

The clicking of the mpi relay in sync with the shifting is probably purely coincedence.
