So, after purchasing my Talon, I noticed pretty quickly that the shifter will get thrown out of first gear whenever I try to start moving. I can start in second easily enough, but third and fifth gear will also slip in much the same manner when on the road. As you can imagine, this is not only annoying, but also dangerous. I have a fair amount of auto repair experience, but one thing I've never touched is anything to do with the gears, so I'm more than a little lost.

I would assume that the problem lay with the shift linkage, but due to my inexperience with such things, coupled with being new to DSM's in general, I am not sure if that is the source of my problem, and even if it is, I wouldn't know where to start on fixing the issue. Which leads me to asking those with more experience than myself! any sort of advice would be helpful.

cables are adustable under the console for more throw or less throw and you really cant hurt it, just mark or remember where they were when you started although I doubt that is the real issue. It won't hurt to try to adjust either under the hood or under the console at the shifter. Those things are old so is the shifter sloppy? Might need some new bushings in it to bring it up to snuff for more throw. My bushings were mere powder, nothing left. When I replaced them, it works like new but the bushings are around 8 a piece and you need 6 I think. JNZ tuning offers them. Trying to be helpful.

i know this off from the post. but i cant seem to find anyone who may know why my rpm tech isnt working. At first i thought it would be the tps sensor but after i bought a new one and replaced it, the needle on the tech still wont move when i rev up. i have a 1995 eagle talon tsi awd

Make sure where the cable ends connecting to the trans have clearance of everything mine was hitting my intake system something simple.....hopefully

This is from a quick Google of 1g dsm popping out of first gear. This quote is from pboglio and I'd say he's got the right idea. "My 2 cents:

Worn 1st/2nd gear shift fork.
Worn dogteeth on 1st gear itself.
Worn dogteeth on 1st gear hubslider.
Insufficient gearstack shim preload or non-existent shims.
Worn hubslider key or toasted hubslider key spring.

The symptoms sound depressingly familiar. I seriously doubt the tranny was looked over thoroughly. What I would call thorough is a complete wet magnaflux. Any visible wear on dogteeth, gear & slider gets pitched."
