I am looking for a EPROM upgrade for my 90 GS-T. The stock ECU is not a EPROM and may be damaged. Its numbers are MD128625 E2T34474. The EPROM I would like to use is numbered MD145903 E2T34478, and is also from a 1990.

If someone can tell if this EPROM will work for my Eclipse it would be appreciated. Thanks...

I am in the same boat looking for a ecu for my 90 tsi. What I need to know is if there is a difference between a awd manual ecu(which my car is) vs a 90 tsi fwd auto/manual or awd auto/manual.

Is anyone else having a problem with the vfaq site? It will not load on either of my computers.

First, there are no '90 turbo auto ECUs FWD or AWD simply becasue there weren't any turbo automatics in 1990.

The differences between a FWD and AWD ECU are so small you will never notice them. Once you change the software in the EPROM your starting over.
The differences between Federal and California are sigificant. California ECUs look at the EGRT input and drive the EGR solenoid and will throw EGR CELs. Again, once you change the software in the EPROM your starting over.

Each version of the '90 ECU has different software, or I assume they do since I've see three of the four versions. I haven't seen a '90 California FWD EPROM yet but would love the data.
So, the hardware is the same between the '90 EPROM ECUs and the differences are in the software that runs on the ECU.

Thanks for your quick reply Steve.

I currently have a 90 tsi awd and my ecu numbers are md145903 e2t34478 which is a non eprom ecu. Currently everything works on it and when I opened it I could not smell any odor from the caps. I am considering going to the local junk yard looking for a eprom ecu but am really skeptical about which years and models to try to look for. Is there any way to test a ecu to make sure it is good before I buy one from a junk yard? I will probably keep using my ecu and will not try to use the new ecu untill I get it socketed and buy dsmlink.

thanks

MD145903 a 1990 Federal Manual AWD ECU. It came in both EPROM and non-EPROM versions under the same part number. The FWD version is the MD128625 that 90gst_sean has and they can in both flavors under the same part number.

I can't think of a simple way to check the ECU at a yard to make sure that it's good.

Even if there was you still want to send any 1G ECU that has original caps out and have them changed before you put it in your car. The rest of the ECU could be great but the capacitors are a timebomb. It's not a matter of if they will go bad but when.

I've written a couple of times how to tell if the ECU is powering up correctly in-car, but even if it does, the original caps have to be replaced. The sooner you do, the less expensive it is.
