17" wheels for road racing.

Stupid question, but is it possible to machine wheels to increase offset? Seems like it would be hard to fit one of these on an everyday lathe :)

Looking at Mr. 1736's pics, 38mm already looks crazy enough, I'd rather not stack another cm on top of that with these 27mm TD wheels :) Beau, let us know if you can fit 255's with that offset.

The pics exxagerate the offset but in person it's not too bad, I'm already really used to it. Now my 17x8 +40s seem too far tucked in. My next tire will hopefully be a 255/40 Toyo RA1, but definitely some kind of 255/40. The rear clearance will almost definitely be too tight. I'll either machine away a little of the control arm or I'll run a 3mm spacer. With these 245/40 (they're are a decently wide 245) I have a few (3?)mm of rear inner clearance now.

Guys,
It is about time to see some pictures, isn't it? How do the 17x9 TDR wheels look on your cars? I got some more in and a lot of guys are asking for pictures especially on 1G.

I'll be on it as soon as I get tires, my new struts, rear wheel bearing, ball joints, tie rods...

I'm in the same boat as Jim, but then you already saw the wheels and tires sitting in my living room. ;)

If I get a chance to get the tires mounted, maybe I'll slap them on our 1g as-is just for a photo-op.

Ok, here ya'all go. Look only as a reflection in a mirror as direct sight will cause the viewer to turn to stone. But the wheels look good.:thumb:

underradar - How do those RE01R's cope with heat out on the road course? I'm seriously considering picking up a set as my next tire as I drive the car on the street as well, and from what I hear they're great out on the track.

Don't know, got no miles on this setup yet. I got them because I read the same thing you mentioned about them.

Previously I had 225-45x17 Nitto NeoGens, This should be a drastic improvement.

I just bought R32 GTR Skyline rims and they are 16x8 with a 30mm offset. For my 1GB, would I be better off with 245/50 or 245/45 for road racing?

I would go with the 245/45 . . . give yourself a little more clearance between your rubber and anything it may want to come in contact with. That and the sidewalls will be a bit more stiff and be better at resisting roll-over (sidewall roll-over that is).

you mean 245/40.....right from your description...right? :D

I recently put my bbk on my car and had to put a spacer for my wheels to fit, it made them flush with the fender and looks great. I am using 235/35/19s 19s by 8 but I want to get some 17s by 9 or 8.5 for track use but dont want them to stick out or rub with 245/45 tires and dont want to use a spacer.. can you guys help..

I currently am running 19in wheels. Yes, check my gallery for pics to prove it. I am pretty sure it's not a good idea to run that size wheel while making decent power. Thoughts?

I was going to buy a set of 15 or 16s until I found this thread. Great point about the big brake kit not fitting in the little wheels.

Next, it sounds like everyone is a fan of 17x9 etc. So, what offset are you going with for 2gs?

Can anyone please explain to me how +27 was determined as the best offset for these wheels?

Thanks for the link. I read through that thread twice and didn't see any real explanation why +27 was chosen, simply "because the offset positions the wheel close to where the factory designed it to be for the suspension geometry of our cars".
