Right now I have a big 16g, Not an evo 16g. I am thinking about upgrading to a 20g. I was goin to build a motor and run a hx40, But since I am in school, I dont want to put all my money in my car. I would buy the tho5 20g used so it wont be too much. Would it be worth it?

I'd say keep the 16g until you can afford the hx40 later down the road or a 50 trim.
20g is a little laggy of a turbo.

if your going to go with a 20g i would go with the tdo6 compressor housings otherwise i would wait and get a hx40 or 50 trim. there are all sorts of threads on here about this just do some research.. i dont know what your goals are with this car but here are some specs..

Flow Rates @ 15psi:
TDO5H-14B-6CM2 405 CFM
TDO5H-14G-8CM2 465 CFM
TDO5H-16G-7CM2 505 CFM
TDO5H-16G-10CM2 505 CFM
TDO6-17C-8CM2 550 CFM
TDO6H-20G-14CM2 650 CFM
TDO7S-25G-17CM2 850 CFM
TFO8L-30V-18CM2 1200 CFM

Max Output:
TD05-14B (stock 1st gen) 275-300hp @ 21 psi
TD05-16G (small) 345-365hp @ 22 psi
TD06-16G (large) 365-385hp @ 22 psi
TD06-20G 430-450hp @ 22 psi
T25 (stock 2nd gen) 235-250hp @ ?? psi
T3 (super 60)/T2.5 hybrid 265-280hp @ ?? psi
T3 (super 60)/T2.8 hybrid 270-320hp @ ?? psi

20g is a little laggy of a turbo.
This definitely does not describe the TD05H 20G. They come on fast and hard like an Evo III 16G with more of a rush on top, with a torquey pull that holds you in the seat and sinks your eyeballs deep into their sockets. Their spool is only 100-200 RPMs later than the Evo III 16G....keep in mind we're talking about a compressor wheel with only a slightly larger inducer- the exducer measurements are identical between the Big 16G / 18G / 20G compressors.

The problem with the TD05H turbine (and why it's not used on all 20G's) is that it does limit compressor flow past a certain point. It's not until you step up to a larger turbine that lag becomes a problem when spool reaches beyond the 4k mark at which point you may want to consider a larger turbo (HX35, etc.) that spools the same and has much more airflow potential.

To the O.P.- you need to ask yourself if you want to pay the money to gain 3-4lb/min of airflow right now, and if you think your current mod list would support such a gain regardless. My buddy ran a TD05H 20G on his 2G for a season or two and that's where I absolutely fell in love with the streetability of that turbo. No other turbo in the 42lb/min range will spool faster and pull harder on our cars.

well, I might just get a hx40 then and slowly build my motor for next winter. I guess I can live with the 16g for another year LOL

Theres a big difference between 16g, 20g and HX35 and 40s. Again, make up your mind on what goals your looking for and go from there. If you are thinking about a 20g but want the power of a HX40...maybe you should go with a FP Green....slightly bigger than a 20g smaller than a 30r and will spool just as fast as a 20g with a lot of throw you in your seat power. My buddy ran 11s all day in the FP Green and you will read nothing but great reviews about them :thumb: Not only that you wouldnt exactly need a built motor to do the same. Maybe an MLS Head Gasket and some ARP Headstuds and your in the 11s all day as well

I think you have to ask yourself if you are even ready for an upgrade. I'm not saying you aren't and whatnot. But what are your goals? Have you achieved any of them?

I know I'm not ready for an upgrade yet. While it would be nice to just upgrade and shatter any goals I've had for the 16g. I have some milestones and goals to meet before I retire this S16G. If I can hit them on this turbo then once I upgrade it will be a sinch to work on my next goals. And I don't think any of my goals are unreasonable.

s16g goals:
1/4 mile time <= 12.5 @ Whatever MPH happens to get me there
HP >= 340
TQ >= 340

Next goals after upgraded turbo:
1/4 mile time <= 11.5 @ Whatever
HP >= 425
TQ >= 425

I tell you this because I understand how important school is and if you haven't hit your goals yet, it will give you a little "Project" while you are in school to challenge yourself and not have to spend a shitload of money at a time when money is at a premium.

I started off with the 20g tdo5h spooled a little slower than the big16g but top end was great. Now im back to a big16g less torque than the 20g but decent.. Also had a 50 trim little but laggy but when the power can on had you sinking in your seat. My next turbo is gonna be the Hx40 28psi and shooting for High 11s for now..

How can you get an hx40 for less than a 20g ? ? ?

Ok, I decided to go with a hx35 with the bolt on housing. It should spool plenty fast and a stock bottom end should handle it at 25psi for a while. I will be building a motor but that wont be done till next year. My auto tranny was rebuilt with the ipt kit so that should be fine. Lets just hope the motor will last for a while. I think it should. At 25psi, I shouldnt even be over 400whp.
