Ok so i recently bought a used 16G turns out its blown:cry: so instead of just rebuild it to a 16G i heard you can make a hybrid turbo that consist of a 20G compressor wheel in a td05 turbo:confused: is this worth it or should i just rebuild the 16G?

This is possible, but you would need to source the compressor wheel, and have the compressor housing machined to match the larger wheel. I would say just rebuild the turbo, it is not too hard. I rebuilt my 20g in under an hour. You just have to make sure you scribe balance markings on the shaft nut, and compressor wheels.

they sell a kit on ebay that includes the 20g wheel, and mhi compressor housing already machined to fit the 20g wheel. it goes for about $150. give or take. ive been wanting to do this to a 16g, but havent had a blown one come by me at a reasonable price.

Has anybody gone through with this rebuild yet? I picked up a tdo5 16g for 30 bucks blown and the compressor wheel is toast already. Thought about tryin this out. I know I'd have to do some machining to the backplate and center housing.

i would rebuild to origanal instead of using the 20g parts
Any reason behind this statement? If you're replacing the compressor wheel anyway, the wheels cost nearly the same...the only thing holding you back from upgrading to a larger wheel is $100 or less of machine work to the compressor cover.

bringing up an old thread i know, but i just wanted to give my insight for any future tuners. I threw on a 20g compressor on my 16g while rebuilding it. I just machined and polished out the compressor cover at work. Eveything went on like clockwork. I love how the top end is pulls all the way to 7.5k rpm so easily now. It has a little slower spool maybie 200 rpm but well worth the topend gaing.I have some before and after pics to compare the size. I can tell this setup likes higher boost. before at 25 lbs i was flowing 39lbs min. Now at 22 lbs im logging 42lbs min. I would say if you already rebuilding it and have tools or can get the compressor cover machined why not, i love the top end gain. it comliments my 272's better plus i have a cyclone intake for the low end.

Bmxr152 do you think is easier to have the compressor from the 20g will be better? a guy here where I live has a mitsubishi 20g but is blown and i wanted to rebuild my big 16g. do you think is better to have the 20g wheel with the 20g compressor or use the 16g compressor and get it ported? I'm not sure if the 20g compressor fits the 16g center piece!
