so i was just wondering.
my 14b is out. if i switch into a small 16g.. am i going to need a few mods to my car?
my car is pretty much all stock except for the piping and IC and stuff.
i am not really worried about how fast my car will go. i do not take my car to the race track.. well not yet.. that's further in the future. anyways this car will be just my daily driver for now..

so can i just get the small 16g and run on like.. lets say 10psi and not need any other changes like for parts and stuff??
 
You can swap in the 16g and run stock boost no problem. In all reality you could even turn up the boost a tiny bit and still be fine.

The 16g will flow more than the 14b at the same boost levels so just keep that in mind.
 
just run it around 12 to 14 psi you should be fine anything more you would want to start loging and get fuel mods. maintenance is a frist though
 
As long as you stay at stock levels you should be ok but I would get some supporting mods to open that bad boy up
 
The Small 16G is a nice replacement fo the 14B - that is what I did. I ran my Small 16G on stock injectors and a rewired stock pump at 15psi all day long. I still run that same 16G but on a walbro 190 pump now. I have some 550's I plan to drop in soon and raise the boost to 18-19 psi. BTW I do have a wideband to ensure my air/fuel mixture is on the safe side.
 
As long as you don't go crazy with the boost, you will be fine. Ideally, you will want to at least get a logger just to make sure. You know you will want to turn up the boost at some point and you should be at least a little ready with the right parts when you want to.

well i do not that much budget so im just gonna run it safe maybe 12 psi will be fine.

im still learning about dsm's so yea..

what is a logger by the way? LOL

and will the small 16g fit fine?

let's say i got the 16g now. what will be the next step in terms of mods and stuff? so far you guys are saying logging and fuel pump. what else and why?
 
Def get a boost controller to turn up the boost. You can make one for next to nothing.

A logger is something like a laptop or palm device with software that can read you engines information. It usually plugs into the Diagnostic Link Connector or can be plugged into your ECU with modifying the chip and case. You can record data through a program(MMCD/DSMLink) that you download to your palm or computer. The palm method is cheaper. You can find those on ebay for $25 and get a $5 cable to go with it so you can plug it into your DLC.

Your turbo whould fit snug:_)

The more power after 14psi and you will need to start with a bigger injectors and a fuel controller. A wideband after that, then a clutch.
 
if you havent bought the turbo go ahead and look for an evo 3 16g, the flow and size in much larger. the mouonts are the same so there are no issues. I did this and while keeping everything else stock and ran into no issues, for a month or so, until i could afford the next peice. as far as the next mods, I would go ahead and do your exhaust first, from the manifold back, since you will have the turbo off anyway.
 
Yes, the small 16g will directly bolt up and be safe at stock boost levels with nothing else.
Are you buying it used for cheap?
If not and you're buying new, I would look at getting your hands on something slightly bigger(E316g,18g,etc) as a 14b with a 16g turbine housing(7cm) will give you pretty similar results to the small 16g.
How bad is your current 14b?
You could always get another used 14b for dirt cheap. I actually just sold a good one last week for $40
 
Stick with the small 16g. Good first turbo upgrade. Bought mine 4 years ago and its still running strong. good for 320 Hp with all the supporting mods. Just remember if you turn up the boost you are going to hit fuel cut and will need to deal with this in way or the other. when i put mine on my stock fuel system wouldnt hold anything over 14lbs of boost without getting fuel cut.
 
screw that. Now keep in mind that this is my own opinion, but if your gonna have to buy a 16g, go with the Big 16g not the small one. Unless you get a great deal on one or something .
 
Now that upgrading to a higher flowing turbo is good but to upgrade it and not able to get the most out of it is kindof close to pointless... inless you are planning on, down the road, upgrading you fuel and getting some type of management system, do it!!

Dont think you can just slap a Small 16g on and turn the boost up to 20psi and be good!
with the amount of air flow the 16g at 20psi will produce over the 14b will more then likely cause you to hit fuel cut and may cause other issues!

Now that you say your 14b is bad, go with the 16g if you only planning on running 10psi... that should work fine. Since are cars are set to 11.01psi stock on the 14b!!

Just some points,

1. The 14b compressor flow 34lb/min
2. The 16g compressor flows 38lb/min (HUGE, HUGE upgrade to the 14b compressor, like well over 50whp)
3. The 14b has the same turbine wheel as ALL 16g, even the beloved evo3 16g. You can swap on a used 16g turbine housing, which is bigger, and get the same performance as any 16g up to about 330whp.
4. The small 16g has the same turbine and housing as a big 16g and an evo3 16g.
5. The small 16g flows 2lb/min less than the big 16g and is more efficient than the big 16g up to choke. IOW, the big 16g is a stupid choice, if you can get a small 16g or evo3 16g.
6.The evo3 16g flows 2lb/min more than the big 16g, and is as effcient as the small 16g up to about 36lb/min. Then the small 16g starts to loose efficiency as you close to choke.
7. The evo3 16g was the replacement to the big 16g and the small 16g came out AFTER the big 16g too. The evo3 or the small 16g compressor wheel both present much better aerodynamics.
8. Compressors have flow POTENTIAL. Just because one may flow 40lb/min and the other 38 doesn't mean that you arn't going to have to up the boost to see that increase in flow. And doesn't mean that the bigger compressor is more efficient.

So if you want up to 300-330whp Just rebuild the 14b and get a usede 7cm^2 16g turbine housing for cheap. If you want 300-360whp, stick with the small 16g. If you want a pure bolton turbo for 350-400whp go for the evo3 16g. The big 16g just doesn't fit in the picture anymore, unless you can get it for a steal don't bother with it.

Just don't be fooled into thinking the small 16g isn't a HUGE upgrade to the 14b. It has a larger turbine housing AND the compressor flows 50-60whp more easily You need 550s with probably a furel pressure increase to max it out. I saw 36lb/min at 22psi with the stick intake manifold and just a cam upgrade (supporting fuel of course) with the small 16g. That the same numbers all the 16g turbos get with that kind of boost and mods. That's because it is the same turbo except for the compressor wheel potential. It's potent and spools VERY fast.
 
You might want to install a wideband just to make sure you aren't running to lean. If you plan on upgrading more in the future it would be a good idea anyhow.

16g all the way! Im running 15lbs on stock fuel pump and injectors with no problems at all so far, it has been about 2 months since i have turned it up to this. All I have is cat-back with megan racing downpipe, aftermarket boost guage, MBC, ported 02 house, and ported 2g manifold. I have heard nothing but good thinks about the 16g.
 
what does a WH1C turbo do?
saw 1 in classifieds for 130.
havent called the guy idk if its still up 4 sale but jsut wondering
 
Why not just spend a little more money now and get the Big 16G so you dont have to upgrade later down the road, and most people on here can already tell you that they love the big 16G and it is a good upgrade for our cars.
 
I believe the WH1C is a holset turbo. If your not sure about the 16g this is way bigger. If you dont have the supporting mods for the 16g then Id say the WH1C probably isnt the best choice for you.
