Hey everyone. I have a question about swapping compressor wheels. I can purchase a 14b turbo from a guy I know for very little money. But, the compressor wheel has bent fins. Can I swap a good spare 14b compressor wheel in place of the bad one without having to balance the turbo?

Yes you can switch wheels, mhi turbos are component balanced, meaning each part is balanced on its own so no worries. I've done this several times and so have tons of others! If your really worried that it could cause a problem then have it balanced, won't hurt anything! But like I said no need you will be just fine. I suggest doing a rebuild while you have it all apart! Hit up gpop shop for a oem rebuild kit for a great price!

Thanks for the quick answer. I wasn't ware that MHI turbos are component balanced. So, I should be able to simply take a set of c-clip pliers, remove the compressor housing, loosen the center nut, swap the wheel, put everything back together, and I will have a good useable turbo, correct?

Ya that's pretty much it! Just remember some turbine shafts are left hand thread and some arnt. So make sure you check this before loosening bolt. If not you can easily snap the turbine shaft! Also its 100in/lb of torque for the bolt and alittle lock tight and your good to go!

You should only swap wheels between two component-balanced 14B's; most of these are noted by an 11mm, right-hand threaded compressor locknut.

Later models with either a right-hand or left-hand threaded 10mm nut were VSR balanced after being assembled....visible balance grinds will be noticeable on the compressor locknut. You should not swap components between two VSR-balanced turbos without getting the rotating assembly rebalanced on the off-chance that balance correction was done to the turbine wheel on the opposite side of the turbo. Some have done it successfully, but for me to say "go ahead- it will work just fine" just wouldn't make me feel comfortable.

Thank you Dsmkauai and JusMX141 for the information.
