12" spal fan help

Hey guys, I'm installing 12" & 9" Spal fans and have a couple of questions. The fans came with these metal brakets, which I figure would mount to the stock mounting locations, right? Second, does the fan have to be mounted to the surface of the radiator? Or should I not bent the metal brackets and have the fan sit about 1" from the surface. Thanks.

tighter seal against the radiator is better. pulls more air from the other side of the radiator rather then just from around the edges of the fan
