10w40 oil in winter?

I need to change my oil soon. When I change it I will change it again after winter. Right now Im useing royal purple 10w40. I am going to try some amsoil. Will 10w40 be too heavy for the winter? It does get below freezing alot around here. Or should I try the 5w40?

I use 10w40 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter, I think it's the best combination for our engines. You don't want the engine/turbo components running with cold molasses before they're warmed up.

well right now with the 10w40 I see about 10psi oil pressure at idle fully warmed up. Im just worried that going to a lighter oil weight would drop my pressure more and I dont want that.

I hear what you're saying, it just that during initial startup our engines (and any engine) have the most wear. Is that oil pressure reading accurate?

40 weight is 40 weight. 10W and 5W refer to the oil's flowing characteristics at 0° F. They're both still 40 weight oils.
Your idle oil pressure is normal.
Money spent on oils like Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil One and Amsoil -and, all the other "premium" oils- is wasted, but the power of marketing keeps customers coming back.

I ran 0w30 last winter. I wanted to see if it would help my 120+psi cold start oil pressure. (It helped a little.) Eliminating my balance shafts without porting my oil filter housing really sent my oil pressure skyrocketing.

I think I have 5w30 in my car right now...
