$10k in GSX or $10k down on 06 Evo MR?

Hey guys. Well I have come to a serious crossroads and I decided I would turn to the people who should probably know best. I currently have $10k laying around for me to drop into my car and I am trying to decide if it would be best for me to put that $10k into my already modded GSX (see profile for list of mods) or put the $10k as a down payment on a 2006 Evo MR. *edit* Also let me say first and foremost that I have no problems at all with my GSX except of course for the fact its a DSM so it breaks once a week. So its not like im replacing a problem. *edit*

The main thing is that it is going to be one car or the other. The reason is because if I buy the EVO I am of course going to Mod the hell out of it, and I cant afford to seriously mod 2 cars. So if I buy the EVO the GSX is sold or of course I just keep the GSX, screw the EVO, and drop $10k into it.

I would really like to know what you guys think would be best. Let me give a quick synopsis of my thought pattern. I dont care about the 06 being new and my DSM being old. Hell everything on the DSM is new or would be new anyway (engine, tranny, etc.) However the EVO MR is a DAMN base model car, its not made for luxury or convenience only performance. And of course since I plan to MOD the hell out of either car, im most interested in performance. I do however need to be able to drive the vehicle on a day to day basis. Of course I have a DD, but I want to be able to drive my MOD car anytime I want as well. I am the type to like to get the most performance wise out of my car. I mod them as much as I can as hard as I can as long as I can still drive them regularly. I dont care about how one may look cooler then the other. I realize that of course the EVO MR is a far superior vehicle stock, but how about putting an extra $10k into my already modded GSX (see profile for mods) with that in mind is it that much of a difference even if I were to of course mod my EVO MR as well? I dont care about a car payment. I can afford it easily. One of the main things that just popped into my head is emissions. I live in GA where there are of course emissions. My GSX is ODB I and passes easily even heavily modded, my EVO MR would be ODB II. Would emissions then become a problem for me? Of course I have no problem paying a "tip" to the inspector to "help" my EVO MR pass. Oh and I plan to keep either car I decide to go with until the end of time.

Oh well, guys what do you think? $10k down payment on an 06 EVO MR or $10k into my already modded GSX? Also please actually view the mods in my profile that I already have as they are important factors. Thanks a lot guys. Also please put your reasons for voting the way you do.

^That's just the point though, there will always be something better every year. Just because you have an exotic or a domestic or import it doesn't mean you will be happy or have respect from everyone. You will never be able to keep everyone happy because different people have different opinions. 10K is alot of money to spend on a car if you really look at it especialy for something you will want to drive everyday. I mean if you have a car already why not just save your hard earned cash for something that will benifit you later on... e.g. house downpayment... college... or just have a good savings fallback. In the matter of cars, its the person that makes the car special not how expensive or lucrative it is... just my .02

well since you say youll keep it forever(which rarely happens) id go with whichever one has the most hp potential and reliability in the long run

me personaly id go with whichever one was more reliable at a very high hp level even if you dont take it to its max potential

take me for example i can take all my parts on my shelf and throw them on my mustang right now and make 600 rwhp and every time i hammer it i risk cracking my stock block right down the middle or i can wait save a lil more money and get a dart block and with the same parts make over 1200 rwhp and drive it every day

like you i have a dd but i still want my weekend car to be able to do dd duties if i want to do a power tour or something similar i am aginst trailer queens

I just went through the same thing. I have well over 10K in my 98GSX..which includes two sets of new rims and tires and some labor costs.

I almost had my wife agree to buy a new EVO MR. My initial theory was...there is no way I'm selling the GSX and taking a huge loss. So I figured I would buy the MR as a daily driver and use the GSX for the track and just to beat on. Then when the MR is older (~6 years) the GSX would likely be on it's last legs, so I would justify selling it...and then I would start to heavily mod the MR.

But then...my wife sees an STi and she decides the MR is now ugly looking and she would rather have the STi. I of course said...that would be fine with me. Then the wife realizes that her SUV is getting old and that she will need to drive the STi...and although she has driven a stick, she isn't that comfortable with them...so she says we will get the STi if it's an automatic... Of course that is entirely out of the question...so now we're just in a holding pattern... so I definitely know what you're going through...except having a wife in the middle complicates things by at least two-fold

Buy your wife a new SUV and then buy a manual MR. I personally think the STIs are ugly.
Besides having a happy wife is more important that having a car of your dreams! I got my wife a 05 Tucson 3 months ago and now she has no issues with me getting my 99 GSX in a few months

Here's my idea, find a totalled Evo, pull the entire drivetrain and maybe suspension, install into a 2g. Spend the remainder on a Gt-35r, ems, supporting mods and fortifying the bottom end. I like the Evo's performance and handling, but the body styling is too bland. It's only a matter of time before someone else does it.

I enjoyed reading this thread, because I'm in the same situation. I made the descision to go Evo so I just sold my baby (Stealth TT) and had planned to throw in the towel on the talon I've been wrenching on for 4 years (over $16k into this thing), but now I'm having cold feet. So the question is Sayajin, are you still happy with your descision? Any other words of wisdom?

Well Sayajin you said exactly what I was gonna say at the bottom of this page, my friend has an MR and he loves it and its fast no doubt but his insurance is more than the car payment. I also agree with some of the other comments like buying the base Evo and going from there. Theres nothing the MR has performance wise that you cant do to an RS.


this tsi 8urv8, you might want to choose your words a little more careful when you say ANY nissian, true it can out due the 350z/ G35, however I cant see it outrunning an R34 GTR. Seeing that the GTR beat the all carbon HKS Evo around the one lap challenge in Japan (cant remember how to spell the track name Ill have to get back to you on that one).

WORTH EVERY DIME!

I purchased my IX MR a few months back and it is worth every single penny. It was probably one of the best decisions about a car that I made to throw in the towel with my GSX and get the EVO. I love it to death. The look, the handling, the speed and power, its quite thrilling. Definetly go with the EVO, hands down.

R34GSX, yep Tsukuba is the one i was thinking of. I have a DVD with all the cars that ran the track, the EVO did hold the record but I think he got beat and then he tried to push it and wrecked the car. I will check the DVD to make sure that I am not mistaken. However that EVO is badass!!!

The way i look at it is you already own the GSX so why not build it. Even if you put down $10k on an MR your still going to have a heafty montly car payment and insurance bill.

I don't even understand why you're asking that question. Not only is the EVO the best looking car out there. It IS the best car all around. You just can't beat it. Plus the EVO IX MR is basiclly perfect. They fixed everything that was wrong with the EVO VIII. Which was basiclly nothing, except the EVO IX doesn't burn oil if you drive it hard when you first get it. If you want to MOD your EVO, get a 2.3L stroker kit with all the other necesary supporting mods and no one will ever touch you. Just check out the AMS EVO if you don't believe me. It's putting out 800+ AWHP. Hands down EVO wins. sure the GSX is tight. But girls don't think 1G eclipses are sexy, no matter how much money is in them. People get play from driving a stock EVO, i don't even know anyone who's ever even got a look for driving a modded 1G eclipse.

Hey nice to meet you.....now you have Girls and attention aren't the only reasons why we buy and mod cars. Most people will tell you to mod or buy your car to suit your needs and not whateverone else wants you to do. I would have gone with the evo MR as well or maybe waited for the evo x to come out. That way you have even more of a down payment and the best of the best. But to each his own sweet cars either way!

I read this entire thread... Glad to see you're happy with your decision. Judging from your financials, it was a win-win situation. I was a car salesman myself last year, and in graduation season, money's easy to come by .

You got all the performance aspects into one package, whereas some cars you have to build up on each of those individually.

I was deciding between a used '03 WRX or keeping my '90AWD TSi... I beat the hell out of my buddy's modded VW R32 and I loved his reaction. We don't talk much anymore, , kept the TSi, and built the engine.
