Yea the lanthanated andthe purple, idk I've been tig weldng for 7yrs now and I. Am doing the same as I've always done with the thoriated and I just don't like how the lanthanated performs, but I guesss that's just me

Past couple days I attended a certification course for an AMI 207 Orbital welder - got a job coming up in a pharmaceutical grade processing facility where every tube requires serialization and mill cert, and every weld serialized too.

Machine is somewhat obtuse to use without any kind of training, but after a few hours of classroom and instruction on developing custom weld schedules, some beautiful weld patterns can be achieved.

Last picture is of the weld head used:

This is the kind of stuff I was asking about in my previous posts.
You answered my question without even knowing it.

I wanted to share what a lot of guys in the process piping and pipe fitting industry work out of. Ridgid makes folding tristands with built in vises, however the bench is more for electricians and with the lip cast into the work surface it is not as easy to work with all the time. The following pictures are of a bench I made today for my garage, a smaller version of the one I have at work.

Everything on it is Stainless Steel, save the vise. Legs are 1" sch.10, and leg sleeves are 1.5 16 ga. tube. Jam nuts/bolts for leveling adjustment. If anyone is interesting in making their own, I can give you more info on parts necessary for one.

Got about 2 hours in tonight. Slowly getting the hang of aluminum.

This weld here broke really easily. It is hard to tell if I am getting decent penetration or just making 4/10 looking beads

Hopefully the wife lets me go practice some more soon (all my stuff is 30mins away at my moms house)

I kept contaminating the tungsten so I need to work on that for sure. I ended up with using +1 on the clearance setting and 20cfh with 3/32 gold tungsten, gas lens and a #8 cup. I had the knob on the pedal at 110amps or so (never looked at the machine to confirm while welding), went heavy on the pedal to get puddle and then backed off.

:thumb: Now you are learning! Very good!
Keep the clearance knob to the left of 0. It's more penetration that way so you put less heat into the piece.

thanks guys....i will give that a try tomorrow night hopefully!

Going to go around to some railing fabrication places today and secure some scraps to use

Question though guys, should i be seeing the inside of the piping melted as well or is it ok for the outside surface to be melted along with the filler wire.

Depends what you are after and if you are back purging. If you are not purging the inside, then you should not break down the material all the way through.

how much were materials for the bench dave?

mike

Largely depends on what your local supplier charges. The biggest cost really is the work surface. 1/4" thick plate is decent - anything thicker just makes the table god awful heavy to move around and break down for transport. But if it is to be setup and rarely moved then thicker is better. OnlineMetals and MetalSupermarkets are two online vendors - obviously shipping is a pain in the ass for raw materials. Local suppliers are best.

the Ridgid Vise runs around $200 depending on what model you want. That was the only thing out of pocket for me. Rest was scrap/drops from work that I used up.

The inside of the intercooler piping?

You shouldn't need a back-purge setup on aluminum, because your not likely to break through the oxide layer on the other side i dont think.
