The fumes with anodizing arent really the issue, aluminium an stainless are toxic as is. Anodizing is just a layer of oxides usually added with a color dye.

I always use acetone to clean my base material and my rod with aluminum. On a clean new sheet, I don't brush just wipe with an old towel and acetone. Same with the filler, it will leave a lot of black when you wipe it, don't be surprised even with brand new filler.



And Gamble is right you should mark out the spot on the valve cover and run just enough amps in A/C to just get the puddle to wet. This brings the impurities to the surface. You should perform this multiple times cleaning with acetone and a brush between.

Cast aluminum is very porous and hard to weld, especially like the others have mentioned when the piece has been saturated in oil. If you start welding and it is black, stop and keep cleaning. Don't try to weld it out. You will probably get a pin hole leak or a cracked weld if you weld it dirty.


And I turn my welder up to 300 when I do aluminum, I like to know I have enough heat.

i use a small fan pointed right behind my head but away from the nozzle to keep fresh air coming into my area. (im at home) is that enough or do i need to take more precautions for anodized metals ?

Valve cover looks pretty clean and not too porous to me? You think it's weld ready?

That looks great. The issue is you don't know how dirty it is until its heated up because everything floats to the surface with heat. And if you used anything to polish it, that makes it even worse to weld.
Try it anyway. You can't beat the experience. Even if it doesn't go right.

If you weld if like that, your gonna have a bad time.


Like gamble said, it's what's under the surface.

That's why you need to bake out oil from VC's even after you media blast them, to powder coat or paint.

I just had itnin the oven at 300 for 2 hrs trying to cure the paint in the well, started to bubble for some reason even though thats what te directions called for WTF

I need somebody to post a video of how to weld to intercooler pipes together ( butt weld ? ) as of right now its the bane of my existence! ..

If i start super low on the amperage i can barely get a puddle on both pipes, but when i introduce filler (3/32?) it just gets that nasty look like it needs more amperage/cleaning to smooth it out im not sure if you know what im talking about.. but when i add more pedal to try and melt that filler clump down i just melt the sides of the intercooler pipe away! i set my pedal for about 80amps, but im probably trying to weld at around 50ish amps , anymore and the sides melt away!

Maybe my filler wire is too large, im using a 2% thoriated tungsten 1/16, i know thoriated isnt recommended but ive layed down some beads with it, ill be going with lanthenated i believe because i hear its pretty much good all around.

Oven cleaner will get anodizing off aluminum. I had anodized fittings I was welding on my vc and got it off with a cleaner called 'Easy Off' IIRC. Don't get the fume free version because it doesn't work. Get full strength and put your fittings and the oven cleaner in a ziploc bag. Depending on how thick the anodizing is, it should take between 15-60 minutes. DO NOT let it sit overnight. Simply rinse the fittings with water when you've got the desired result

May be oil trying to come out of the aluminum and getting under the paint.

Compression, are the pipes anodized? How are you holding them together?

I think ive watched all of his videos, his and tig times. The pipes are polished i think? But its the same pipes ive been practicing with. My beads havent all be superb but i thought i could at least weld them together! At first just sitting against each other on the tavle but last night i had them in a vice they had s perfect matchup.

I'm actually doing my intercooler plumbing today and will be welding this week. If I get get any vid or pics I will post them. I'm using 2mm 3" diameter tubing polished.
Urban, for the threaded oil cap I went on eBay and found one that was about 20 bucks including the cap. It was billet aluminum and it welded quit nice considering it was on a VC. If i can find it I will post it.

Like the yogurt container catch can?? CC is my next project, than maybe a fuel cell. Start with aluminium again.

I make a lot of catch cans. Would like to see what you come up. And a fuel cell. That would be great to see. I wouldn't do it personally because of all the pressure it sees. Not yet at least.

I got a replacement torch from htp on eBay. Search miller diversion torch. Email if they won't have the torch you want as they can be custom made.

Anyone know what thickness and material I should use to make a downpipe gasket for turbo suby downpipe?
